Steering Wheels need to be mounted???

Hi there i'm new here and wanted to ask a quick question regarding the steering wheels. I saw on GAME website that they are doing a deal for GT5:P and Logitech EX Driving Force Wheel PS3 for £59.99.

What my question is that my PS3 is about a little more than a 1 metre from where i'm sitting, so will the cables be long enough ?

Also does the steering wheel have to be mounted on to something or can they just lay flat on a surface???
 
you are putting a lot of force on the steering wheel when playing. if it is just sitting on a table, it will move all over the place and be very frustrating to play. so the stiffer you can mount it, the better. if nothing else, the wheel can be mounted to a cheap folding chair or coffee table if it is heavy enough.
