Steve Kinser is one of the finest dirt oval track racers in America. Consider how many championships he has won. He's won over 20 series championships. Yes, dirt ovals pale in comparison to sportscar endurance races. Yes, oval racing can be boring to a lot of people. But when you think about it, winning 1 (let alone 20) is a serious accomplishment. So I ask you... is Steve Kinser the greatest champion in ANY discipline of racing? Any discipline- including Formula 1, World Rally, sportscar racing, stock car racing, motorcycle racing, or any other specific discipline of racing? Let's have a spirited debate here on GTP.

I think so, Dirt track racing (even with the whole "they're going in circles, and "real" racers run on road courses B.S.) requires lots of skill, espespecially wiht WoO cars. You're basically sliding a short wheel base car with a big block around a track @ 140mph 3 times a night for at least 10-20 laps or more, and that's if you don't advance to A-main and don't place in the Last chance main. Add a small margin of error, and you got a tough series.

However, you have to look at this even though he has probably the most wins lets look at the top 3 most winningest(sp?) drivers out there:

Steve Kinser (230+)/WoO and NST (basically the same thing)
Richard Petty (200)/NASCAR
John Force (110 and counting)/NHRA

If you know a small amount about these series, they run A lot of events per year, with NHRA the least amount and NASCAR (In Petty's time). Even still these disciplines require TONS of talent.

Kinser is an awsome driver period, I easily rank him with some of the other top drivers in the world.

Actually, while Kinser's WoO total is quite impressive, there are many open wheel short track drivers with even higher totals and more amazing accomplishments because of their extensive track championship experience.

Take the man they call "Father Time", Bentley Warren. He's been competing actively since 1957 and as of last year has amassed victories at 34 different tracks all over the states and Canada, including 6 wins in the Oswego Classic, winning the Copper World Classic at Phoenix, the Little 500 wingless sprint car race at Anderson Speedway twice (500laps on a 1/4mile oval), and has 2 starts in the Indy 500 (1971 and 1975) plus 14 top ten finishes in 37starts in USAC Indy Car competition.

Kinser's a topnotch driver, no doubt about that, but even in the short track world we appreciate multi-discipline drivers a heck of a lot.

I know we've had threads on him before, but i'd like to nominate Gerry Marshall as the 'Most Winning Racer'

He has won more than 600 races in his career spanning 4 decades. As a still active driver up until his death in 2005, i suspect this total would be much higher by now. Gerry has driven and won in every conceivable kind of circuit car, including single seaters - which must have been quite a feat for a bloke of his 'build'.

Although he was mostly a national-level club racer, on the day, he could probably beat anyone in anything.

He was quite a character too!
