Hi All,
I'm a big fan of the Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione car, and an even bigger fan of endurance racing events. I wanted to lay out my initial thoughts on a potential race and get feedback from anyone interested in participating. My thoughts are as follows:
Car: Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione
Track: Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Laps: Enough for about 2-3 hrs of racing
Damage: Full
Fuel and tire wear: On
Mandatory pit stops: None, although I'm sure people will have to pit at some point.
Tuning: None, car must be stock, with the exception of an oil change.
Tires: Sport Soft at best
Driving aides: off for the most part. I'm willing to leave some TC and ABS available though.
I don't know about others on this forum, but I generally don't like how a lot of online races turn into max-tuned bumper car messes. I'm willing to flex on just about everything on my list above aside from damage. I find that without damage, people drive like they don't care. If damage is on, I don't think we have to worry much about dirty driving, either.
Race Rules:
-Cars coming out of the pits will maintain an inside line coming up to the first chicane and give way to cars already on the track for proper turn-entry. In other words, do NOT try to drag race someone and go double-wide into the first chicane.
-Passing will be allowed anywhere on the course with the exception of chicanes. I've found that Monza is a truly fun course, but people sometimes end up hating it because of the pile-ups on the chicane. Keep a single file through them. Exercise patience, you can always pass anyone slowing you down on the straights or curves.
-The exception to the chicane passing rule is when there is a disabled or off-track car present. Cars that wreck in the chicanes suffer a naturally enforced, two-fold penalty: A) The stricken car shall give way to all competitors immediately behind it, and B) The stricken car will of course have to pit at the next opportunity to repair damages. Is everyone sensing a trend here lol? Drive responsibly through the chicanes!!!
-Accidents do happen. Although I really want to participate, if no one else wants to observe the race instead of participate, I will consider filling this role. Ideally, I'd rather everyone race and we leave the officiating to each other on a gentleman's (and lady's) word. Not to beat a dead horse, but the chicanes are one section where accidents are sure to happen. Aside from the tight turns and tire barricades, drivers should note that the main danger stemming from chicanes is the driver in front of them and the driver behind them. Not all of us are pros, so consider people braking early in front of you or too late behind you as par for the course. All the more reason to give everyone a wide margin through the chicanes.
-Other than that, I can't think of too many other rules, nor do I care to. I'd rather things be simple and clean cut. Have respect for others, realize at the end of the day it is only a game, and have fun, winning or losing.
Prizes:
Everyone's favorite part, right? This is the area of the competition I am most open to suggestions to. I am willing to be very generous with the prize(s) because this is a race I'm interested in having, and I don't expect everyone to share my level of enthusiasm. In a way, I guess I'm willing to make it worth your while to participate in a dream race of mine! What I am considering:
-All drivers will be paid for participating outside of prizes. What they will be paid, I have no idea, what are your thoughts?
-First prize money: 1 Million credits
-First prize car: TBD. Possibly a vintage Alfa?
-First prize item: Nice paint chips, like Mazoria (from the FT-86 concept.)
-"Commemorative" Racing outfit. (I'm thinking an all red racing suit.)
-Second prize money: 500,000 credits
-Second prize car: TBD. Again, possibly a less-rare vintage Alfa?
-Second prize item: Paint chips, horns, what do people want?
-Third prize money: 250,000 credits
-Third prize item: Again, what kind of things are rare, in demand?
Regarding prizes, I haven't set up a race with them before. For every driver's participation payment, I suppose I could do that person-to-person through the community lounge. However, does anyone out there know if there is a limit to prize/gift money?
Closing thoughts:
Obviously, this is going to be a long race. If there is a lot of interest, I'm not quite sure yet how I'll accept entries, but I have a feeling part of it will be how much time a driver is willing to spend on the race. If I can get half a dozen or more racers that are willing to spend 2-3 hours racing Alfas on Monza, then I will be thrilled. If there is a lot of interest for this race minus the long length of time, I will also consider making a series out of it, or start an Alfa's owner club.
Speaking of series, if for some reason some of you love this idea, or the race is a big success, I would love to hold additional ones at other tracks, such as La Sarthe, Nurburgring, etc.
