I have kids that destroy discs. I want to know once and for all if I can purchase a ps3 that will store and play ps2 games that i have already purchased?

I do not care about downloading from the online store

Thank you

john

Not at all. The only model capable of playing PS2 games does not allow you to rip the games to its hard drive.

Hrmmm, well just to be safe, sure 👍 Well I'll just say that there is a post on Engadget about a modchip that suposedly works. Probably best to edit your quote now Legendary :)

Or does it? The world's first PS3 (USB) Modchip That Let's You 'Backup' Games On To Your Internal PS3 HDD Or FAT32 (NTFS is in the works) USB HDD. Still a bit early to see what $ony will do to retaliate, but it's legit. However, it probably doesn't support PS2 games (unless MAYBE you have the 60GB version), but you never know.

And that would be discussion of illegal activities. Probably best to remove it....

It explicitly doesn't allow you to do what the OP wants to do anyways.

To the OP: It is possible to do so (or at least it was last I knew). It requires you to disassemble your PS3 every time you want to do it, so you probably don't want to do it. It also isn't something that can be discussed on this site regardless.
