Nicest part of hell
Hi,

sometheing strange happened during my workout today:

I was lifting my 50 pounds dumbbells with a single hand from a 30° bench, pushing the weights from shoulder to straight arm and that 12 times each arm. During that workout the biceps of my right arm started to make funny ''popping'' noises, like bursting a bubble gum bubble.
It did not hurt at all but felt strange and every time I lifted the weight this noise came. First I thought it is my shoulder joint or something, but it clearly comes from the biceps and I can feel some kind of a bubble if I touch my right arm during that workout which dissapears when my arm is straight.

Is it possible that this is air inside my arm? Its not blood and it does not hurt and it also happens just with that workout. The funny thing is that this workout is mainly for shoulders, not the biceps.

No I am not crazy, but my biceps is. :dunce:

my friend had something like this in his ankle, shortly after he was in agonising pain and couldn't walk for a week, I think it was tendonitis? Not sure if thats how you spell it, but I'd be tempted to see a doctor if it didn't stop...

Does the sound occur when you lift less heavy weights? I'm guessing it has to do with the large amount of weight your lifting.

Popping noises can't be a good thing when you're working out. Try changing your grip or angel and see if the noise goes away.

It's probably your long biceps tendon moving around. Try other shoulder workouts, and if it ever hurts, stop and see a doctor immediately.

I will stop doing that specific exercise for a week or so, dont want to damage anything although nothing hurts. (yet)

It always happens if I lift weights over my head, no matter the angle or grip.

With weight less than 20 pounds the sound does no occur anymore but thats far too light as I can lift the dumbbell 40+ times and thats not what training is all about. I always adjust the weight I lift to as much as I can lift 9-10 times. Anything under 10 lifts is just for looks and anything over 12 times for endurance.

I just googled for a pic and it seems that it is indeed the (inner) biceps tendon, but what the hell is it doing popping around where it shouldnt? I guess some muscle tissue enmeshed itself during the exercise and is blocking itself when the biceps is moving, guess some arm stretching exsercises without weights wouldnt hurt.

My advise is to make sure you are good and warmed up to reduce injury. Seems the older I get, the more pops and cracks occur but a lot can be reduced with plenty of warm-up sets, working up to the heavier weight. It's almost on a day by day basis for me. Some days, I'll do 4-5 warm-up sets before I start to go heavy, other days I can get right into it after just a couple warm-ups sets.

I have some really bad elbow pain when I do skull crushers. If I go right into it, my elbows will ache for over a week unless I do huge sets of lighter weight first. I also notice that If I take a little wider grip to begin with, I have less elbow pain. I have little issues with like rope or bar tricep extensions. Something about the angel of the lift and the angel of the connective tissue/tendons.

If you do get some ache type of pain, un-related to muscle shock, ice can be your best friend in the evenings. Glucosamine is also a must to help with tendon and joint related issues.
