I've been invited to go on a Subcrawl tomorrow. For those who don't know, the Subcrawl involves riding the Underground in Glasgow city centre, getting off at each of the 15 stops and having a drink in a pub nearby to each of the stops. I reckon the idea sounds sort of fun, but I don't know how the reality would be. So, has anyone here done this Subcrawl or some kind of pub crawl with a similar transport in between stops? The idea allows the participants the freedom of choosing what they want at each stop (and it doesn't have to be an alcoholic drink either, so it's not just about getting drunk and throwing up on the train  ).

More information on the idea can be found on their website, here (I've only read part of the website, so I'm not sure if it contains any bad language or other non-GTP friendly content. If so, sorry to the mod who has to lock the thread/remove the link.

I think this pic sums it up nicely:

I guess I don't see the point, but then again I'm not much (read: a few Mikes Hard Lemonades a year) into drinking.

Might be entertaining to watch, though.

Nice pic. I believe there will be one or more disposable cameras being taken, so you might get to see some pics.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not much of a drinker either (been months since I had my last drink actually), so I'm not intending going too far. I think a strategy of alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks might work (and not mixing alcoholic drinks, maybe stick to pints, but that's a lot of fluid intake). Maybe spirits or something of a lower volume would be better. Well, I suppose I'll see tomorrow as I'm now going. Starts at 12 noon and is planned to finish at 11 or so. Wish me luck

Sounds like fun. I ride the Metro here in Montreal, and when we were kids, we would play a little game that went like this: the train would stop, you had to get out and run past as many cars as you could before the doors closed. This resulted in lots of childhood fun, a lot of wasted time, getting yelled at, and the ocassional getting caught in the sliding doors.

Just drink a little margarita at every stop. Or maybe just a beer. I don't know how close these stops are, but you shouldn't get too awful wasted.

The only advice I can give is "For God's sakes don't do this in London"...

Did you know it's illegal to use the tube if you have a single drop of alcohol in your blood?

It's illegal to drive a London Underground train if you have a single drop of alcohol in your blood... It's a two pint minimum...

Thanks for the 'advice' guys

The stops are only a few minutes apart in terms of travelling, but I think we'll probably aim to do a stop every 35-40 minutes (the underground shuts at 11 tonight I'm told, so we have a maximumm of 11 hours to get 15 stops in). Plus the underground will get very busy round about rush hour, so I think we're planning on having something to eat then, "wasting" some of our time. I think I've settled on a strategy of pint, spirit, coke.

I've been told the drinks aren't too expensive (probably about £2 for a pint and £1.50 for a mixer) and the all day ticket is something like £1.90. Plus I think we're going to see a mate's band at some point.

I've no idea about the legality of riding the subway drunk, but we won't cause an trouble, we're good people :)

Never been on a sub crawl before, with there being a lack of any subways in Manchester and Mansfield. I have done my share of pub crawls though. A pint locally costs £2.50 unless ou go to the Met then it costs £3.50.

How well do you know Glasgow?

My advice would be to start off somewhere nice, like Hillhead, and then work your way back into town - that way, you'll have had a few before you reach Bridge Street and a skinful before Govan - that might help, since some of the pubs around there are a bit scary!

Also, a note about the legality of riding the 'Clockwork Orange' when you're drunk... if it were illegal, Glasgow would have the busiest jails in the world. So long as you guys behave yourselves, there's nothing to worry about. Infact, one time I was getting on a train in Govan and a ticket inspector stopped me and said, "Hey, are you carrying any alcohol??"... I said, "No, none at all..." He handed me a bottle of Buckfast and said "Here, you'd better take this then..." :p

Well, that's me just back in. Was great, no trouble, no injuries and a good time had by all participants.

My knowledge of Glasgow is limited to round about Strathclyde uni really, so I never knew about anything. I've only been on the subway once in the last 10 years too. Thankfully there were a few "veterans" in the group, so we were never lost. We started off at St Enoch's and went on the outer circle.

We took over 75 minutes at the 1st pub at St. Enoch's (Times Square), waiting for people to turn up and buying the Discovery tickets (£1.90 for all day travel, very reasonable). We also took quite a bit of time in the 2nd and 3rd pubs, because although you obviously have to get on the subway to go to the next stop, the pub we went to at the 3rd stop was 20 yards from the pub at the 2nd stop (so we had to walk 5 minutes to get back to it). We had to make up time so at the 4th, 5th and 6th stops we did a quick one. The idea was to get in, explain what was happening to the barstaff if need be, get a drink and make our way to the next stop. This was good at saving time, putting us easily back on course. We had more time to relax in some of the other stops, enjoying a nice seat in the sunshine outside at a couple of the pubs (don't remember what stops though, my memory is a bit poor). We'd planned it so we'd be at the 'dodgy' pubs early on, so they weren't too crowded and that worked well, Kinning Park, Ibrox and Govan I'm led to believe are the worst and they turned out fine for us. We got on at the last stop (Cowcaddens to Buchanan Street) with about 15 minutes to spare (5 to 11) and we had a long time in the last pub to have a sit down and relax.

My plan of pint, spirit, coke went down the drain early on. It ended up being pint, pint, pint, shot, shot, shot, pint, pint etc. Since it was spread out over such a long period of time it was OK though, I don't think anyone got that bad. I spent about £60 for the whole thing, including a taxi.

Well, it was great fun, looking forward to next year

edit: I forgot to say there were some rules in place over the time. The most important rules were that you weren't allowed to sit or hold on to anything on the subway. If you did, you got a forfeit (had to ask a girl for her number or take a shot), but nobody had to to the forfeit.

edit2: Spelling

Glad the subcrawl went well!! I like the forfeit idea!

I went to Strathclyde Uni many moons ago... I lived in the halls of residence for a year (97-98 ) but then moved to the West End after that.... Can you remember the names of the pubs you went to in Partick, Kelvinhall, Hillhead and Kelvin Bridge?

Cool, we actually met people from Strathclyde who were on a regular pub crawl at the end of the night. Must be a lot of us

I don't remember many of the names, but I've just had a look on the subcrawl site and I think our route was:

Times Square (St Enoch),
The Glaswegian (Bridge Street),
Laurieston (West Street),
Don't remember Shields Road,
The Doctors (Kinning Park),
Kensington (Cessnock) (This might be the one),
The Stadium (Ibrox),
Brechin Bar (Govan),
The Fiddlers (Partick) (Again, I'm not sure on this one),
Partick Tavern (Kelvinhall),
Don't remember Hillhead,
At Kelvinbridge we went to the pub on the corner of the row of buildings across the bridge. You go down a steep (at least they felt that way) set of stairs into a fairly small area with tables and chairs (probably something like 6 or 7 tables). There's also an area on the outside with picnic tables (which is where most of us were). Don't know the name.
Don't remember St. Georges Cross either, although the picture of the Captain's Rest looks familiar.
Cowcaddens could have been Macintosh's Bar, but I'm not sure.
Buchanan Street was a bar/club hybrid across from Pizza Hut, don't know its name either.

My memory isn't great at the best of times. Add in drink, subway travelling and rushing about (not to mention frequent piggybacks including falling on my posterior while giving a piggyback and trying to race the subway train).

brain scran
cost me over a tenner down here in cornwall for that!

Heh, good value indeed then. This was only for the subway though (and it's only got 15 stops, so it's not very expansive).
