Okay, one came up for sale in my town, Just wondering about it. It has the 114 HP turbo engine, from what I can tell, and only some surface rust on the rear quarters. I'm not looking to go too terribly fast, but it sounds like a step up from the 70-some HP Nova. only $750.

Of course, I'll have to look at it closely (and my financial situation) before making any sort of decidion. What are specific problem areas? What should I ask about?

That's what he's talking about.

Since I know nothing about the car specific, I'll just tell you to ask the basics like the service record if one exists and what's been recently done etc. How many miles, how many owners, the like.

For $750 you aren't going to get perfection, but I figure you know that already.

http://www.xt6.net/forum/ Check that forum. Based on reading the posts it doesn't seem the be the most reliable vehicle ever produced, but maybe sign up and ask what to look for.

Go sign up at www.grmotorsports.com . It's easily the world's best forum for people interested in salvaging budget beaters for enthusiast duty. There's a user named SVreX who knows all about older, obscurer, cheaper Subies.

Well, thanks for the advice you guys, but driving by and actually looking up close are two different things.

The body rust was worse than I thought, having rusted through in some spots. as well, there were scrapes and scratches everywhere, both doors had managed to have the same type of dent in the same spot, and one hubcap was from a Mazda. the Pliades were also missing from the nose. Oh, and the dealbreaker? Automatic tranny.

However, the advice was very helpful, and next time I run into an obscure Scooby, I'll remember SVreX.

That isn't an uncommon price for these things. If you're seriously in the market and ever have more than a passing interest, some research would serve you well - you can probably find a better shape manual one for around the $1000 mark. When cars depreciate to that point there's not much dollar-value difference between a crappy one and the best one in existence.
