Suggestion: Can we get a character count on status comments?

I get "Comment over 420 character limit" when responding now and then this way users can tell how many letters they are over.

What is the actual limit or does it also count a new line as characters?
I had 419 and it said I was over the limit, got it down to 416 and still said I was over the limit and I used Libre Writer to tell me how many characters I had.

If you weren't including them, I believe spaces count as characters, too.
