Is it totally wise to get a fast car as a first car? Should you not build up your driving experience first, before getting a machine which may outstrip your abilities to drive it?

I might agree with that, except he is talking about a 100hp Golf :p

If you want reliable for $2500, check out an old Corolla.

The entire drivetrain on the MR2 is from a FWD Corolla :) In general they are reliable cars, but there's always a possibility of having problems with something older. Which is why for someone like me who doesn't have much money, I would recommend not spending every cent you have on the purchase price of the car.

Beaters.......

1966 AMC rambler, get a 390 and you'd have yourself a project that when done could be a great sleeper.
a 390 could fit in a rambler? i ask because i have a '66 rambler classic that i want a new engine in (its got a 232ci six cylinder). if so, where could i find a 390 and what would be difficulty of putting one in?

A 100hp, 800kg Golf. Not a modern 100hp, 12,000 ton Golf.

That's a sub-8s 0-60mph time, with all the fine braking technology and crash-worthiness of the mid-1980s.

Get the Golf, you won't be disappointed other then it looks a little weird and the hp numbers will make your friends laugh at you. But the car will be relativily quick.

Saab 900. Hey, it looks like you!

If a 350 SmallBlock can fit in a Datsun 510, then a 390 should fit in a Rambler.

There was the S/C Rambler, Which had a hurst shifter and an AMC V8, But I'm not sure which one.

I would have no clue on the Difficulty.

I know the Golf will be reasonably quick, but it's still not some wild beast. Really, if you are so bad at driving that you can't handle a Golf then you shouldn't be driving at all.
