So I got BT Infinity installed today, and it is allegedly 20 Mbps broadband, although the guys who installed it tell me that they were getting speeds of nearer 40 Mbps. So I go onto speedtest.net, Playstation Store, iPlayer and iTunes, and see what kind of effect my new broadband connection is giving me. My laptop gets between 7-9 Mbps, and my PS3 reports anything between 7 and 18 Mbps (download sp eeds). Yet, iPlayer still stalls like it used to, and downloads from the PS Store are not perceptibly faster either.

So, how reliable are these speed tests, and is it too early to be worried about the lack of speed on my laptop and apparent lack of performance on my PS3? I know that BT Infinity is in its infancy, but I don't get how the guys were getting a download speed of nearly 40 Mbps from the kit they installed in my house, but it only translates to a max of 18 on the PS3, and 9 on my laptop... is the difference between my laptop and PS3 speeds simply due to my laptop being older and less powerful? And if so, am I only likely to feel the benefit of this upgrade on my PS3?

One thing to remember is that you can only download as fast as the source can upload. The age of your laptop shouldn't affect download speed. Are you downloading the same files from the same source on both laptop and PS3?

also are you wireless in the home? or cabled to your laptop, and ps3?

you'll get much better speeds if you connect via cables.

to the point where if I play gt5p online wirelessly, I'll be put in races with 2 - 3 other cars because of the bandwith, but cabled, a full field.

I use the PS3's wifi connection for GT5 Prologue and I'm able to have a full field in online races. My signal strength is 100%. Maybe your reception is dodgy. If that's the case try placing the PS3 vetically or moving your wireless router. It may help.

yeah, tried that, got a few different wireless routers too, same result, So i ran some cat 6 cable through my wall to the gigabit router. solved all my problems. :D

Cheers guys 👍 I am using wireless (although it is dropping out more than it did previously, but that's another story), but I will probably connect the PS3 via cables if it is quicker. As for the downloading speed issue, I was using speedtest.net, but got a whole range of different speeds from the same server, That said, I did eventually get a 23.7 Mbps download speed, so I guess it must be working! :) Anyway, thanks for the tips!

If it isnt staying the same when your on wireless your connection musnt be strong enough, what is the percentage of signal it says you are getting. A cable will give maximum effectiveness but I dont use one and I dont have a problem even at 60% signal.

I have 20Mbps broadband, but we only have a local exchange capable of putting out 8Mbps so it kinda defeats the point...

Usually when broadband goes active there is a period where the company try to get a stable access speed for your phone line before you get the full speed the line can take.

(can you tell thats out a mandatory statement  )

👍

Well, ain't that the truth :)

For some reason, I can't even watch trailers from the PS Store when connected wirelessly without interruptions, but wired it plays seemlessly, and I'm hitting download speeds of 30 Mbps on the PS3 now, which is pretty funky. Thanks for the tip, it's much appreciated!

I have the same problem two. Dowloading HD Trailers from the PS Store on a Wifi conection seems to take ages.
