Supra dead? Or is it...

I don't get why everyone is so attatched to the Supra.

It was technically inferior to the Skyline (which I also lend a dislike to) and didn't look better than an RX-7.

It's the same reason you prefer the RX-7 over the Supra: personal preference. For every Supra-hater out there, I'm sure there's a rotary-hater on the other side. The Supra was extremely tunable, and could be molded into whatever type of car you wanted: drag, drift, track attack, etc. The Skyline was pretty much the same, just pretty much different. ;)

Or you could just be like me and think the RX-7 and Supra are both cheeky, but the MR2 was the more driver's car ;) Nothing beats a mid engine layout for dynamics, nothin. Combined with a nice short wheel base and such, great fun.

I love Toyota, but they need to get back on track with a CHEAPER RWD sports car first, then go about making ultra high performace GT machines. :P

And for the record, I do loathe the Skyline in its montrous weight and computer driven nature. I like to control my car, not have the computer do it for me.

you defo cant deny the mk2 MR2 what a cracking car i agree, but look how that ended up, the MR-S a poncy lil hair dressers car, come on toyota sort it out

Montrous weight? the Supra isnt exactly light on its toes

1998 Toyota Supra RZ ~ 1540kg (3400lb's)
1998 Nissan Skyline GTR ~ 1540kg (3400lb's)

(Depending on sources the recorded weight for both cars vary +/- 100lb's)

As for the computer driven nature, well the ATTESA ETS (4WD torque splitting) and the Super Hicas (4WS) on the GTR is fairly easy to adjust or disable aftermarket.
Whatever, its a matter of opinion, I like all of them Supra's, Rx7's, MR2's, Skyline's etc.

I'd say screw 'em all, buy a Corvette or 911. You'll pretty much be saving money here in the US, and at least by my standards, they are actually cars I'd want to be seen in. Unless of course the decisively old-school (my favorite) Celica-Supra is up for nomination...

CORVETTE????? hahaha the car designed by people that have never heard a corner before, they are pretty good looking motors and go well in a straight but thats about it

Oh no, please edit your post, this may get ugly.

Well being that you are new around here and you are from Europe, I'll go easy on you. But I would suggest that you read-up on the Corvette before making any kind of random criticisms of it. Growing up in Michigan and being around Chevrolets the majority of my life, I've had plenty of experience with Corvettes.

Older models aren't quite up to where the current C6 is, but when you can buy a $43K Z51 and not be too far behind the $220K F430 in most performance tests, I'd call that a damn-good deal here in America. You can always drag in the $70K Z06 as well, and given that it is well, undeniably fast when compared to damn-near anything (see Top Gear testing if you want a European test, hell, Fifth Gear's review was pretty fair too)... That alone justifies the car as a performance icon.

...You're new, so I'll end it there. I'm one of the few remaining American car guys here, so you can bet that I'll attempt to defend or promote our models whenever possible. However that doesn't mean I like everything we produce, but when the Corvette is probably my favorite car sold anywhere in the world (911 and GTI are up there as well), I'll defend it to my last breath...

thats fair enough, its all about personal opinion when it comes to cars, and to be fair i know that chevy have come along way developing this car over the last few years, and the stig did get it round the top gear track faster than a murcielago, im a big chevy fan mostly the old camaros, bel air and new silvarado tho

I'm own a supercharged MK1, so I completely agree 👍

The MR-S is the lightest out of all three generations of MR2's. The handling is also on par with the MK1's. The looks are a bit...different then the other generations but I've seen plenty of good looking ones with slight modification.

I've also met a guy with a completely stock body MR-S with a turbocharged 2zz engine in it, go tell him he drives a poncy lil' hair dressers car:trouble:

Now theres a stereotype that's out of date. The C6 is a good car in every way for it's price, except that they don't offer rhd. That is my single biggest gripe with the C6 Vette. Unfortunately for Chevy if I was in a position to buy a car like that, I'm a bit of a TVR fan so the Vette wouldn't get a look in. I'd rather a TVR Sagaris which I can get for the same price as a C6, but that's where my personal tastes come in. You mentioned personal opinion in your second post "they ... go well in a straight but thats about it" is not an opinion, that's you trying to state a fact, a fact that is wrong. The bit in the middle of the quote that I left out, that is a personal opinion. The bit I left in is not.

well thats your opinion then aint it lol thats me told then

BTW can you believe that they are shutting TVR down in blackpool, i was totally shocked, so i guess this will mean they will get even more expensive as they will be imported in from russia, i used to live 5 mins from the factory and my dad still does, i will miss passing by there and seeing the gorgeous cars and amazing paintjobs

They're moving out of the UK to cut costs down, not to raise them. It's going to be cheaper for them to operate outside the UK than within. I'm dissapointed that they're moving the manufacture of the chassis and body out of the UK ofcourse, but Ricardo will continue building the engines here which is something I guess.

yea i guess so but i certainly cant see them getting any cheaper for us, TVR may benefit from this but i dont see how we would, anyway i wont love them any less for it i just think its abit of a shame that the future of the british motor industry is going down the pan and taking TVR with it

I really DO hope the Supra is dead.

Once a name is dead, it should stay there. Resurrecting it after a prolonged absence and nailing it to something just to shift units is a risky business, especially if the resulting car is nothing like the original. Surely they can't be at the end of the automatic-cool-name-generator already?

New car, new name.

...Well there were plenty of rumors flying for a while about them brining back the outrageously old 2000GT name for the new model. But given that it is all probably going to Lexus, none of it matters...

Thank you for saying this. I get so tired of people thinking the MkII is what an MR2 should be. It isn't. The MkII is powerful but its also quite a bit heavier when compared to an MkI or the MR-S. I would love to have an MR-S, they handle so friggin well. Miata's can eat their heart out at the auto-x compared to the MR-S.

Good response.

Here is mine.

Doesn't look much like a girl's car anymore, I think.

Now back to the topic. What ever happened to the rumored V8 powered Supra I read about in Road and Track I thought?

...There was also the rumor going around at GM that they were co-developing a production version of the V12 from the Cadillac Cien with Toyota for a future supercar. That never happened, and too bad really, as the XLR could have been a helluva lot better with that V12 Northstar under the hood...
