Hey,

My mom is looking into buying a wireless surround sound setup for my dad for christmas (so the cables from the old one won't run across the floor for 2 years until we stop being lazy and drill holes)

We'll probably get that today at best buy, so any recomendations (hopefully not over $300-400, and for my parents, sound quality really isn't an issue.)

Anyway, since my dad is getting the new system, I'll end up getting the old one for my room (There's really nowhere for it to go! :P)

I made a sorta blueprint in photoshop, to get recommendations on where I should put the speakers. It's an older 5.1 Surround sound system, with wires (I don't mind seeing them though)

I'm just wondering where to put the pictures for optimal sound quality, I can move some furniture around if needed (lower shelfs)

Thanks in advance!

From,
Chris.

If I were you, I think I'd arrange it something like this:

The only difficult part, since I scaled it off of your drawing, is I'm not sure how much room you actually have. If you'd like, I could have a go at drawing the room in AutoCAD. All I need are dimensions of the room, doors, window and furniture. 👍

The only thing I don't really like about my proposed speaker placement is the right surround as it's a bit too far away in relation to the left.

Edit: In doing a quick look, as an option your parents could consider a Rocketfish. There are a few things to remember, though. Both the transmitter and the receiver need power. Not a problem for the transmitter as it's right next to the TV, DVD, etc. but could be a deal breaker for the receiver if there's no receptacle nearby. Also, there will still be wires between the receiver and the speakers, but I'm not sure how big an issue that is, either. Just a few things to keep in mind.

I like the room idea, I'll try and get the measurements tonight or tomorrow. While the rocketfish seems cool, it would still be a problem because the living room is set up so people can walk through it, and the wires would get in the way. And I wouldn't be able to get the surround sound system for my old room :P

And the TV downstairs isn't HD in any way, so a 1080P thing wouldn't get good use.

I figured that would be a problem. Any chance we can have a picture of where the surround speakers will be going?

And there you have it folks! The truth comes out! I was tempted to not post it for that very reason, actually.

Never hurts to plan ahead! ;)

Post or PM me the room and furniture dimensions and I'll see what I can do. 👍

Well, we ended up not getting a new surround system for downstairs, but I still got the old one since my mom said my parents wouldn't use it.

The lady at Best Buy did direct us to the RocketFish, actually.

We ended up buying my dad an external HDD (500GB) for Christmas. I'll probably be the main user of it though, with all my NASCAR 09 stuff.

I've got the old system set up and the room rearranged like TB had in the link. So now I've got 4.1* Surround sound!

*It's a 5.1 system but one of the speaker's wires were chewed in half by a cat, and hopefully I'll have it fixed by Christmas :ouch:
