Does such a thing exist anymore? All the packaged surround sound systems in stores have a DVD or Blueray player with them. I don't need one as I have my PS3 for that. I just want a good speaker system with a small subwoofer that I can connect directly to my TV with an optical connection. It also has to be reasonably priced, and doesn't have to be extremely fancy.

Anything come to mind?

I don't make hardly any money, so cheaper the better while still retaining some quality. I'd say around $200-250 would be nice. Anyone have any experience with those sound bar things?

Get onto Ebay and get seperates. Will do exactly what you need, and your budget will stretch to plenty.

Something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-STR-DE475-...95423?pt=Receivers_Tuners&hash=item2c5bda519f sold for $100. Anything by Marantz, Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer, Denon, are generally perfect for starting out.

For speakers, it's amazing what price some great sets go for. Again, keep an eye on ebay or your local gumtree equivalent.

Buying these seperates will save you a fortune, sound significantly better than almost all of the all-in-one solutions, and give you a good upgrade path.

Sorry for the late response, forgot about this thread.

What do you guys think about this?

For the price, I'm not going to complain about the DVD player.

Edit: Or this system from Sony?

I'd recommend a Technics Surround Sound Receiver, its what I got, and it works great. The Sony one is way better though, so probably get that one.

That JVC is garbage, and the Sony isn't that much better (10% THD?!). Neither of them look like they will fit your needs very well.

You really should look into a used dedicated receiver from a reliable brand, either through Craigslist, eBay or a dedicated audio store. A good, mid-range Onkyo, Sony or Pioneer that is 4-5 years old can be had for as little as $60 if you are lucky (though 80 is more common), and will absolutely destroy any standalone home theater system that you can get for under $500, even if you hook crappy speakers up to it. With a $200 budget, you can pick up one of those, a decent powered sub and a decent set of speakers and still have some money left over to buy cables.

This mate. 👍

My opinion of course, but get the best stand alone receiver you can afford first. Then you can start looking at speakers. The problem with packaged units you are stuck with what you get, if you start with a reasonable receiver you can always upgrade speakers, cables etc later as you get more cash.

Cheers Shaun.

Thanks guys, I'll keep looking around. I just looked on Best Buy's website because I have a $50 gift card that I can use there and was hoping to save a little money by doing so.
