Suspended race

I haven't played in quite a while and am not sure about it, so...is there a way to go into the main menu without losing my race progress? I'd like to complete the race afterwards but I'm not sure if I'll forfeit my progress if I do so

I.e. press "O" when the game's giving me the option to cancel joining the race again when I'm starting the game.
 
When you suspend a race, the only thing you can do is to resume it. If you quit and go back to the main menu, you lose the saved portion of the race.

I know, that's been my idea as well - but I can't see my DLC, bought it 2 days ago, in the list on the PSN store. So I wanted to check it out in-game but am afraid it might cause issues if I play around with my save games. Ah well, it'll work. I'm sure. It's Sony after all!
