Welcome to my first Race report in which I will blog my experience of the gruelling 172 laps of the famous Suzuka circuit.

Not sure how often I will suspend the race. Can't see me doing all 172 laps in one stint but we'll see.

I will start the race with the following.
Car: Toyota YellowHat YMS Supra (SUPER GT) ‘05
(Oil change gives me 468 BHP 583pp)
Wheel: T500RS
Aids: None except ABS 1
View: Cockpit Only
Available Tyres: RH, RM, RS, Inters, Rain

After loading I'm met with a very wet track and a downpour.

I'm rather slow in the wet (can't see 10 feet in front of the car when using cockpit in a premium :nervous:)

Lap 1 100% wet so I start on full wets. I can't see past my own face so take it easy and move out of the spray to the right side of the track.
This means I am able to still see my braking point and dive down the inside into T1 to put myself up to 4th place behind Sexton, Negami and Timonen.

Lap 2 The car feels good although traction is limited out of the corners due to the low grip levels. I settle behind Timonen with Rowe all over my rear end and manage to outbreak Timonen at the end of the front straight to take 3rd place at the start of lap 3.

Lap 3 I was just thinking that I don't have to push too hard as I have the front 2 in my sights when I get on the gas a little too eagerly whilst negotiating the "S" Curves. The resulting spin puts me last.

Lap 4 I am -17 behind the leader but only a couple of seconds behind 11 place Bridges in the other '05 Supra. I slowly catch him over the course of the lap but I really can't see anything so a pass will probably have to come on the straight.

Lap 5 -22 to leader, I pass Bridges on the entry to Spoon Curve and close up on a 3 car train of Rosso Kemp and Burch. The AI are definitely slow in the rain but I'm not much faster. I am finding it hard to see my braking markers and can't get the power down. Behind other cars I am near totally blind from the spray and my wipers are going crazy.
There is no way I am switching out of cockpit view though and when I do try and pass I am doing it carefully without making contact and picking my spot.
At the end of the lap I'm still 11th but the gap to the leader is down to -21

Lap 9 Up to 7th gap to leader now -13. Coming down the back straight visability is zero when trailing another car. I brake to early and Rosso rear ends me but manage to hold my position.

Lap 11 Another spin! This time before Casino Triangle. I had just got myself up to 4th -5 leader but am now back in 10th - 26 Leader.
I'm not too bothered as I know the AI are slow in these conditions. The Problem seems to be that they lap consistent times regardless whilst as soon as I get clear air and my visibility improves I reel them in.

My tyres are now half worn so will have to stop soon.

Lap 14 This race is not going as well as it should be. 11th Place and my rears are shot. Kemp got past me in T1 and I am losing time fast so I decide to pit.
It's still raining buckets so it's full wets again. I leave the pits dead last -1:03 to the leader but with improved visibility without the spary from the other cars I expect to catch up quite quickly.

Lap 20 5th Place -13 Leader. Some pretty uneventful laps on the newer rubber and I have flown up through the field. If it stays wet I will surely win this easily which will be slightly disappointing as I'd rather it was a battle.

Lap 24 I'm an hour into this race and have just taken the lead for the first time. I past Rowe in Spoon Curve and Sexton before Casino.
My rears are worn already and I need to pit again soon. At the moment I can wheel spin them in 4th gear!
I should have really opted for a softer wet setup but kinda glad I didn't as I'd be even faster against the A.I.
It's been raining hard from the start and I now intend to build a nice lead.

Race suspended. Time for scrambled eggs and toasted bagels.

Lap 32 -1:38 behind leader after pitting for fuel and tyres on lap 25 I found myself 4th. It was a longer stop as the crew put 30L in and as it's still raining hard I go for another set of full wets.
Since then I have failed to make up the deficit. Rowe leads now followed by Messina and de Wit.
I'm sure none of those ahead of me have pitted despite pit road being busy last time I was there.

Lap 35 Pits again... I'm having real tyre problems. The last set lasted just 9 laps and my I have fallen 1:46 behind the leader which is now Messina who started last on the grid. I wonder if the save resume bug is at play here and the AI are now on different tyres.

Still raining, although not as hard for sure. I take a punt and go for inters even though the track is still 100% wet. Another 30L of fuel.

Lap 36 Just completed my first lap on Inters and immediately felt happier. More grip! But I'm now in 9th place right behind Durham and Timonen and a hefty 2:30 off the leader. Rain still falling but track wettness has fallen 2% so it looks as though inters was the right call.

Lap 38 Obviously not a tyre bug. I was simply on the wrong tyres. Seems the Full Wets are only good for the monsoon conditions I had earlier. Track wetness now 94% and I just posted my fastest lap on these new inters. Still raining, Up to 6th -2:09 leader.

Lap 42 The leaders have pitted and the gap went down to -1:30. I got myself up to 4th and am now lapping the track some 10 seconds faster than I was earlier. The rain is now more spits and spots compared to the first hour and a half.
1 Hour 45mins in and it's not been boring at all. The biggest thing was being on the wrong tyres for sure and it's made things interesting. Long way to go...

Lap 45 Still 4th and still losing time. de Wit leads from Messina and Rowe with me in 4th some -1:38 behind. I have now lapped Bridges in the other Supra '05 and the rain is still falling albeit very lightly.
Track now at 74% so I need to think about switching to slicks soon.

Lap 48 2 Hours in and in 4th place. I decide It's time to switch to slicks. My wipers are still going and there are still a few spots of rain on the windscreen but I am losing to much time. I dash into the pits and get a full set of RM's. Whilst stationery I hear the leaders go by. I've been lapped!
There I was thinking it was all to easy and I'm now a lap down.
I leave the pits still in 4th but I can see Burch closing me down. He gets in my draft down the back straight and passes me and holds his line through Casino. I need to crack on here!

Lap 53 Track 36% Rain stopped completely around 55%. Once Burch passed me he pulled away at an alarming rate. I was caught and unlapped by Bridges and despite me putting in PB after PB was falling further behind. I have decided that the only thing I can do to try and stop the rot is switch to softs. I don't need to pit yet but I have to do something the pace of the AI is so much faster.
I leave the pits in 9th. Even a podium looks unreachable at this time.

Lap 64 2 Hours 38 mins. Pits again. I've clawed my way back up to 5th following some pretty hard driving during that last stint on softs. I know I have pitted way to much so far and that's really cost me but the rain played a big factor. I decide to switch back to mediums in the hope I can stretch them to 15 laps without losing to much time over each lap.
Tyre wear has now become a major factor for me in this race. Unsure if it's my driving or my setup that's causing the excessive wear but if I can put in 15 decent lap times on this next set I will be happy.
I will have to work hard to keep 5th place and do my best to close the gap on Burch in 4th during this next stint.
Track just turned completely dry so hopefully I can make this set of mediums work better than the last time I used RM's.

Lap 72 still in 5th but I have now unlapped myself. I am now the fastest man on the track and -2:06 behind the leader de Wit.

Lap 74 5th Place - 2.05 leader. Just 10 laps out of my tyres again Into Pits and a race suspension. Only 98 to go

Resume

Lap 75 I was lapped again by the front runners whilst pitting and opted for the harder compound to see how they faired. Rejoined still in 5th still dry and mostly cloudy.

Lap 85 Passed Rowe whilst he was in the pits to take 4th for a short time but had to pit for fuel and tyres. 10 laps stint on hards too so switching back to Mediums.
Rejoin the track 5th again right behind 4th place Rowe. -1 lap to leader

Lap 95 Pitting in 4th place. I passed Rowe in the "S" Curves and put in a new PB followed by some very good consistant laps. I finish the stint still in 4th and 1:29 behind the leader. I managed to unlap myself when he pitted.
Well past half way now and it's been a blast so far. I've gone from thinking I will win it easily to thinking I have no chance to my current position of 3/4 of a lap down and still in with a chance.

Race suspended to watch Top Gear

Resume

Lap 106 Pits again and I have managed to chase down and pass Messina to take 3rd but he passes me again whilst I'm stopped. Gap to de Wit in the lead before the stop is 1 min 38 seconds. Birch is still second. This stop I go for just 15 ltrs to try and make up some time.
I've now raced 4 hours 10 minutes.

Strategy really comes in to play now. Do I go for longer stints with slower lap times, longer stops but less of them or do I keep to the 10 lap stints?
At the moment I'm sticking with the shorter stints. I want to see how close to the front I am after de Wit has stopped again. Interesting stuff.

Lap 117 In the last stint I got past Messina to take 3rd and then Burch pitted which dropped him to 4th and left me in 2nd for the first time in the race.
I close the gap on the leader to 1:27 before I have to pit again. I leave the pits and am back to 2:04 behind the leader Messina is 2nd and a few seconds in front of me and Burch is now right behind me.
Half the circuit is now bathed in sunshine whilst the area around the pits is still cloudy.

Lap 127 I have again passed Messina and de Wit pitted on lap 124 which brought me closer to the front spot. 20 seconds in fact by my in lap. Pitting for new RM's and 30L of fuel.
Question is, how far from the front will I be after my out lap.

Lap 128 I left the pits in 3rd right behind Messina and I got passed on the entrance to spoon. Crossing the line at the start of 128 sees me - 55 to de Wit.
The whole circuit is now in bright sunshine.

Lap 136 2nd 35 seconds behind the leader and into the pits again. I have now raced for 5 hours and 14 mins and am yet to lead this race for any significant period. I've spun just twice early on in the wet and on the whole have lapped pretty consistently.

I have really enjoyed it so far but will finish up tomorrow evening.

Resume

Still bright sunshine. Everything is exactly where I left it.

Top Eight :
1st de Wit
2nd Me
3rd Messina
4th Burch
5th Rowe
6th Sexton
7th Durham
8th Timonen

Lap 146 After my last stop I was back to 1:14 behind de wit but over the course of the stint I close that gap back to 39 seconds.
For now I am going to stick with my 10 lap stints on medium slick tyres. It seems de Wit is pitting somewhere close to every 25-30 laps so he's got at least one more stop to make. Obviously his stops are way longer as he fills the tank where as my stops are around 30 seconds.
I should get an idea if I can win the race very soon as I expect him to pit within the next 10 laps.

Lap 152 de Wit pits and as I blast down the front straight I see hie Silver/Blue Woodone Advan Clarion GT-R pull out of pit lane in front of me.

Lap 153 I cross the line in 1st and lead the race for only the second time. I made a move on him on the entry to Spoon Curve but he switched back underneath me and took me back on the exit. Into his draft down the back straight and we were side by side through the fast left T15. I had the line for the Casino Triangle though and already pull out a +1.07 lead over the line. I have to pit again in 3 laps though.

Lap 156 I pit and with a lead of 5.788 seconds for a fresh set of mediums. My crew chief recommends 35L of fuel which I guess should be enough to get me to the end but but I opt for 37L (can't be to careful).
Meanwhile Burch has passed Messina to take 3rd Place and Sexton is up to 5th.

Lap 157 I am 37 seconds behind after my last stop and I will have to stop again once more. My heart sinks as the realisation hits me that I should have gone for softs. I don't expect de Wit to pit again so now it's all about reeling him in. This could be close and it's starting to hit home what an epic race this is.

Lap 160 I am trying to put in some mega laps but traffic is hampering my progress. My fastest lap this stint so far is still a second off my PB. The gap to de Wit is down to 20 seconds. 12 to do

Lap 163 I pit at the end of the lap some 14.3 seconds down. No fuel and soft slicks to get me to the end. There's just 9 laps to go.

Lap 164 As I cross the split marker half way round the lap I am a full 42 seconds behind. Surely I have left it to late?

Lap 166 My last lap was a PB and i passed 4 cars! I start the lap - 33.550 behind de Wit.

Lap 167 -29.466

Lap 169 -22.346

Lap 171 -13.546 My tyres are losing grip.

Finish De wit takes the chequered with me -9.520 seconds behind after 6Hrs 30Mins of racing. Burch Takes 3rd.
Gutted I didn't switch to Softs for that second from last pit stop.

I wonder if anyone will actually read this thread or enjoy this report but I had an amazing race for sure. I was interested the entire way through.

That was an epic report and I really enjoyed reading it. So unlucky in the end. I just fiished this race 2 days ago but use an X2011 because I wanted to get it done quickly.

Read it and enjoyed it. It's really gutting for you - only 9.5secs down after 172 laps! You know what the means though? This car can win... another try? ;)

Thanks guys. Yeah definitely race it again. It was particularly gutting. Especially as I could see the leader at the end of the straight as I crossed the line to finish.

I have yet to do this race because I hate the track so much. 1000km on it just won't be fun. That was a riveting report. Hopefully you do it again and get the win!
