Suzuka and Hong Kong in GTWC

I'm having trouble with Suzuka in the GT World Championship using the Minolta against the Sauber (I know there are easier cars to beat but I went back and re-entered until the Sauber showed up again in the line-up). I've already won the championship but I'm trying to get 100% golds in a repeat championship and having trouble. I'm using the Minolta and it just can't seem to keep up, especially on the fast sections of Suzuka where the sand run-offs are instant death and in Hong Kong where it just can't get enough acceleration in the tight downtown areas. I can beat the Sauber with the F1 car (it's a struggle but it's possible) but it seems like the Minolta is totally outclassed. My setup seems pretty good based on what I've seen here and I've used quite a few of the tips available. Is the Minolta just flat-out slower?

I haven't won the Sauber yet (I only play A-Spec so it takes time to collect these cars) but is it noticably better than the Minolta? I've abandoned the GTWC for now and am starting the F1 Championship in order to get the Sauber (all A-Spec).

Hi msako: 👍
No offence meant, but if as you say:

"I can beat the Sauber with the F1 car (it's a struggle but it's possible)"
then you need to go to "Arcade Time Trials" & Practice, Practice, Practice these two courses until you find the rhythm for each.

It's well documented that this series is easily beaten with a stock (except for tyres) TOYOTA 88C-V Race Car (MINOLTA) '89 the NISSAN MOTUL PITWORK Z (JGTC) '04 & most impressive of all a stock MERCEDES-BENZ AMG CLK-GTR Race Car '98.
Keep at it...all of a sudden everything will just "Click!" ...O.G. :D

Hi msako,

About the differences between the 88C-v and the C9, I would say they are close to eachother. I tested both on the nurburgring in arcade mode without TC/ASM, the laptimes are quite equal.

Like Old Geezer I would say that you should beat the sauber quite easily with a F1, so that may be a question of practising ?

About Suzuka, I find this track very interesting, especially the first part. In this section, it's all a question of finding the good rythm (that's also the main comment the F1 drivers say about it). Be too fast in a curve, and you won't be on the good line for the other. Be too slow.....and you will lose time, of course. Moreover, doing mistakes here is painful as there is a lot of sand around the corners. You have to be very smooth on that track, keeping a little margin in order to avoid mistakes that waste a lot of time.

As for Hong Kong.....well sorry, I'm so bad at that track with a lmp car, I hate it, the car wheelspins all the time. Putting TC on would be the solution, but I don't know if you will consider it as fair.....

Keep focused.

On Suzuka, I can beat the Sauber easily with the F1. In Hong Kong, it's not so easy but it's beatable. The problem I have is with the pitstops. The Sauber seems to go forever while the F1 tires start getting orange and then red much quicker. Unfortunately, I can't build a lead that easily to compensate.

No offense taken. Actually, beating the series is not that difficult. I've done it twice. Beating the series with perfect 10 golds is very difficult for me against the Sauber, and I have trouble with Hong Kong and Suzuka for different reasons. Suzuka because of the long run offs and the fatal condition of running off the track if I get bumped (I was bumped off the track twice by back markers into the long sand traps and that's basically the end of the road to keeping up with the Sauber for me). The track isn't that difficult. It's getting bumped off that kills Suzuka.

Regarding HK, I just can't seem to find a good setup that handles the quick turning. Turbo lag, or something is also a problem. I get a similar problem with Opera but that has some long straights and wider turns that compensate. I'm not sure I need that much more practice having logged at least 100 laps on HK in the last week or so. I know every turn and braking point pretty well now. It's the car setup for leaving those sharp city turns that I can't quite get. In contrast, I can handle the NY course just fine, but those turns are much wider and acceleration out of those turns is much faster.

Suzuka - Not really good advise but prectise like hell first and try to set the car up where you're confident enough to push like hell. With any event, you've got to know the track and your car. For me, it's doubled with Susuka.

Hong Kong - This had me by the balls too. I twigged it one day testing an Esprit at Opera. Soft suspension is the key. Same again, practise like hell but aim to soften the suspension bit by bit untill you find a good comprimise between stability and smoothness over the curbs/bumps. Also, because its point and squirt like all street tracks you dont need really stiff suspension to keep the car stable in high speed corners because there are none.

The worst two corners are the 2nd and 3rd corners. Master these and you'll be able to hammer through the tighter curbed city-street corners with the softer suspension.

Hope this helps

Suzuka is the only race i retired from and the only reason was the 2 Nissans teamed up on me!

They sandwiched me into the 1st corner and ran me off the road. Needless to say i was to angry to carry on.

Though if your really having troubles after the 1st 2 corners if you really need to you can cut the grass miss out one corner and still keep your speed up. But thats only if you REALLY need to

Hi again msako:
I'll let this thread go after this but I really need to impress upon you that there's "NO MAGIC Set-up" for these two races. I'm only an average driver & I bested them with the Minolta "As Won" except for a tyre change & with the Motul JGTC w/only MINOR Tuning + a Turbo. Sjenk (who I suspect is a bit "Quicker" than average) used the MERCEDES-BENZ AMG CLK-GTR Race Car '98 with ONLY an Oil Change!!!
Without being able to view your replays I'd bet you're driving TOO DEEP into the corners. Try to finish braking BEFORE entering the turn & then DRIVE through. More commonly known as "Slow In - Fast Out!" There are several threads in the Write-Up section where you could compare your Lap times. GOOD LUCK 👍...O.G. :D

Suzuka seemed hard but i pushed hard and focused really hard and won by 10 seconds.

HK is very hard but persistance is the key, as with Opera, also make sure your gears are short in Opera. and brakes are towards the back.

I was having similar problems with getting bumped into the sand. I can usually keep up on speed but if I pass a car and then slow down into a turn it seems they hit from behind at a pretty good speed. The other thing I noticed is that they can drive off the sand much quicker than me.

On Sazuka I find a lot of ground can be made at the second part of the first corner, where it tightens up. The AI cars seem to slow down ALOT more than necessary and you can easily make ground on them here. Also, I suggest qualifying to get as close to pole as possible, just saves you from having the slow cars in your way. Oh yer, the other place you can catch up is the last chicane, its tricky but the AI always brakes too early and with practise you can catch up alot here.

The trick to winning the races is to not suck. It's that simple. Don't suck and you will win.

I do not consider myslef to be a great driver, but i won the gtwc my first time through with a clk. Oil change, tyre tweak, no beefing up on horsies, and quite a challenge on some tracks.

But im afariad Suzuka wasnt one of them, however, it is a track that im quite fond of, and as such (silly as it may sound) i seem to go better than on tracks i do not enjoy.

As for beating the Sauber on Hong kong, later braking and earlier accelaration seemed to be the key for me. I pulled the transmisson back untill it hit peak revs going into the hairpin
at the end of the longest straight(im sure you know the one). Also, i found that after pumping out a few laps (around 30 under each condition) that the default setting for the driving aids, were of no real help at all, instead i relied on those fat @$$ tyres to do all the gripping.

On a final note, i did find ol' super speedway pretty damn hard in the merc, and i am yet to go back and better my poor showing of 4th. ;(
