So I just got my wheelstandpro and G27 today, I wasn't used to use the clutch to change gear and I keep crashing, so that's normal after few hours I feel it's really fun to use the 6 gear shifter..
So I found out that I drive better with the paddle shifter... fine
Now I got other problem, I couldn't handle FR car as well as I did with DS3, on DS3 I could drive FR or MR cars without traction control, so now my problem is when the FR or MR cars lose traction, normally on DS3 I would adjust the wheel to point straight before I nail the throttle again, but on the steering wheel I couldn't do that? I keep spinning out even in 230 hp S2000.. Any tips from the pro here?

Practice.
Assuming your wheel is set up correctly it's just a case of getting a feel for it. Ds3 makes catching slides very simple (especially since the sensitivity could be turned up), you'll need much more finesse with the wheel, combined with more physical effort, to achieve the same level of control. But fundamentally it comes down to feel, which comes with practice.

Make sure the wheel is straight before you floor it.
Sounds silly but it took a couple of weeks before my mate got the hang of this.
Remember on the ds3 you can go from full lock to a straight just by letting go of the stick, with a wheel you have to force it back to straight when getting on the gas hard.
Other than that I remember back on gt4 when I got my wheel I had to re- do my settings to suit the wheel. If your driving with you suspension and LSD settings from before you got the wheel it could be to do with this.

Definitely practice, you need to get the feel of the wheel. This comes with time, so your corrections become second nature. I agree with Alfabob, you really need to make sure the wheel is straight before you slam the pedal to the metal! If you are coming out of an apex, you need to gradually increase on the acceleration. If you are driving a car with any performance, you need to have some finesse! I've been using a G27 with GT5 Prologue and not with GT5, bolted down to a Playseats. I think it's the best set up, anyone who isn't using a wheel is missing much of the experience! Good luck and see you in my rear view mirror!!

i did the same thing, its a fun yet blood boilling transition. once you get it, I think you'll be quite satisfied. a thing i do quite often now, to advance my knowledge of saving and sliding loose cars, is to get a car with lots of power, put race tires on it, burn the tires away so that they are dead, and go around turns as fast as i can without it breaking loose, its a fun, demanding excirsize! and it makes loose cars easy to drive

I'm also in the exact same stage as you, now I'm just waiting for my wheelstand before I can drive properly (pedals are currently too close to accomodate my 5'8 frame :irked:).

I'm still about 5-10sec off my DS3 laps, so there's a lot of room for improvement.

- Practice is the key
- Try with some assist on first, when you get used to the wheel then turn off those assist
- Your end goal would be running with every assist off and running on stock cars
you will actually find GT5 is a brand new game by using the wheel. One of my mate was using DS3 the whole time but after he came to my house and use the wheel, he is preparing to buy himself one. Keeps on saying "man..this feels so good, it's totally like a different game"

April I switched to g27 and playseat from ds3. Same problems. Cannot save a slide. And still it's a hair raising experience.
Best thing I did was gradually working up from the amateur setting then eventually the full sim setting in wheel options. Sounds a little cheesy I know but it helps in just the areas your struggling in now.

First learn to just drive effectively, then put it on full sim when your comfortable.

Even now I just try not to get outta shape. Sometimes I'm chuckin the steering wheel all over the place in chaos trying to save a slide and not lift! It's intense....

But I can get top 300 on most time trials!!

Practice!

Edit: the H shifter and clutch is useless in gt5.

You don't have to drive as hard as you think with a wheel. The key is to try and be smooth as possible, and slowly progress.

As soon as you feel that, then start playing with the modulation of the gas/brake through corners( Now that you have a Gas and Brake pedal to do that with!! woohoo!).

Then when you start pushing it, understanding countersteer will help in maintaining stability. But also remember you are on a wheel so countersteering means you have to completely and quickly turn the wheel the opposite direction, and then return back into the angle of the turn swiftly.

:)

First of all, go to options, turn wheel on "simulation" and ffb on 7-10 (try a bit, i got mine on 10 and like it, others want to play on 7 or so...). Otherwise it will be boring :) (sry if somebody metioned it already!)

My settings is currently on simulation cause I thought since i got the wheel let's just make it more realistic lol, maybe I'll try and start with amateur setting 1st. And it's very true, having a wheel makes it like a whole new game now. I would love to get one of those racing seat but I don't have space in my room, so wheel stand pro at the moment.

@trk
I've had to do that. I HATE IT I HATE IT IHATE IT IHATTTTTE IT!!

Worst thing you could do to a driver.

@dr3w
Just stay at simulation. Like I said you don't have to drive as hard as you think.

oh and do you guys play it with clutch and H shifter or just paddle shift all along? with paddle shift I can drive better but with H shifter is quite fun too. I try to use stick with cars that in real doesn't have paddle shift

Both work, but in the game you'll be faster with the paddles. But it is an enjoyable experience using the shifter, especially if you get in a room whereevery1 is doing it, as you have to approach turns slightly different.(and dare I say throw in some heel/toe :0)

7-10 on ffb sounds way too high especially for G27. Remember the in-game ffb strength setting determine the strength of the signal the game sends to the wheel. Once the wheel's ffb motors are turning at max any stronger signal is ignored. In audio this is referred to clipping. Clipping when it comes to ffb will cause the ffb to go from off to fully on and very little in between.

Are you kidding? Do you own a G27? 10 is way too low as it is. The force feedback on the G27 with gt5 is notorious for being too weak, and you want him to turn it down?

My current setting is at 3, I'll try to turn it up later and see how it goes, anyway i heard about that if you turn the ffb to the max, the wheel doesn't last long?

I sometimes use the stick shift in A spec games, but online is strictly paddles. The stick really doesn't work with some Ferraris and MBs or anything else with more than 6 gears.

Part of the transition issue from a controller is re-learning to use your feet on the pedals - even if you drive a car or motorcycle; this is different (like muscle memory).

I find that cars tuned/setup for a controller don't work as well with a wheel. So, you may have to change some car settings.

Stick with it! In my opinion, if you use a controller you're playing a game. If you're using a wheel, you're driving a car.

Sounds like Youre just getting used to the wheel right now. Give it a month. Soon you'll destroy your ds3 lap times.

It really depends on the car and tires. Drive a X1 and the ffb motors are either fully turning to the right or to the left. This causes you to have to hold on the wheel tight to keep it straight. Even with a "1" setting it's too strong as it can heat up those motors. With most race cars and racing tires you want the ffb setting on low unless you like the wheel ffb to be fully on/off .

Got my settings on 10 since the beginning of GT5 and it works just fine. I don´t drive X1, so i can ignore that effect on this car. :)

I think what I need is just time and practice and practice and practice, it's only my 2nd day but i feel abit frustrated already. I probably have around 15 hrs a week to practice as I have to work and etc. Switching to wheel is like completely starting from scratch.. I been driving in real for around 8 yrs now but this is completely different, I never have any track day experience or driving a powerful FR or MR car at all. Guess many of us doesn't have the privilege too but anyway practice makes perfect

hey guys, how do I catch a slide with wheels, when it starts spinning should I countersteer or try to keep the wheel straight by applying light throttle?

counter-steer and feather the throttle.

might help you to practice sliding. take a FR car and go to top gear test track and practice donuts, might help you with rapid steering and throttle corrections.

It takes practice, listen to everyone in this thread. I felt the exact same way when I first switched from the DS3 to the DFGT wheel. After I finally adjusted there is no way I could pull times near the DFGT using a controller.

Now that I have switched to the G27, it's pure joy. Just gripping the wheel feels so awesome, and the pedals are fantastic.

Give it time my friend.
