Switching from PS3 to PC gaming - help needed!

After reading and being told over and over that it doesn't take thousands to build a gaming PC that will run games such as Arma2 and BF3, i've decided to look into it a little more seriously.

I used to be a pretty hardcore PC gamer back when games didn't require insane rigs to run them, but switched to console when the PS3 was released. Now I feel like i'm missing out on games that i'd really enjoy playing and am looking to (hopefully) self-build a dedicated gaming PC... but I haven't a clue where to start!

I've read through quite a few budget build threads here and on other sites, and watched a couple of hours worth of videos on the subject, but i'm still quite overwhelmed so would appreciate some help (advice and links would be great).

Are there any 'here's the parts list, buy them and build it yourself' type of deals anywhere? Or is it a little more complicated than that? I take it that most builds are just a case of screwing on some parts and connecting some leads?

Looking to spend between £300-£500 ($470-$780). I already have a monitor and peripherals, so no need for those.

Thanks to you both.

That chart is rather useful, lots of things to google!

I imagine prices here in the U.K are ridiculous compared to the U.S, but leave me to worry about that. I have lots of high heels that could potentially fund this project...

So what kind of stuff would that build in the link run? BF3 on what kind of settings?

On a single 1920x1080 display, very high/almost maxed at over 60fps no problem.

How do you find which parts are compatible with what without reffering to part picker sites? Just searching around on the web?

Just had a look at your PC build, I assume it will run just about anything you could ever want?

DQuaN, as you're from the U.K, what kind of money would you suggest me spending? I'd want to be playing things like Arma2, BF3 and maybe Assetto Corsa.

I keep forgetting that you can continue adding to PCs part by part... derp.

If you are hoping to max out BF3 and such that budget won't be enough, however if you have no problem with lowering settings you should manage.

I may have gone over the top with the hdd and ssd, you could go down to 120gb with the ssd and 500gb-1tb for the hdd and you could get a better graphics card and a I3 or FX-4300.

Hi there.

I am in the process of a i5 PC Build that is looking like it will touch £600.

Link in my sig if you are interested. :)

When you're next at WHSmith or your local newsagents pick up a magazine called Custom PC as they have a section on rigs of various price ranges...

Nice little chart there. Good idea for someone just to get a rough idea of things.
Just one question about it though, what comes after "Extremist"? As this is where my system is.
