ORLANDO -- As the backup to the best center in the NBA, unheralded Marcin Gortat doesn't cause much of a stir when he enters and leaves a game.

He causes quite a commotion, though, every night when he arrives and departs the arena. He has arguably the loudest, fastest car in a league that is filled with players who drive some of the fastest, sleekest, most elegant rides in America.

"People in this country don't know me yet for my game, but people around this town know my car,'' Gortat said as he was showing off his ride to FanHouse. "I don't think there are any cars out on the street that could beat me. I have an engine like something in NASCAR. This car is fast. It's perfect.''

Before he starts it, Gortat's car doesn't look any different than any other car in parking lot filled with rich people. It's a new BMW M5, shiny and black and looking like a million dollars.

But once he starts pulling away, you can hear and feel the power, even at a distance. A part-time mechanic in his native Poland before he signed his first NBA contract, Gortat has made myriad modifications to the car that now includes an 800 horsepower engine, which is big even for a high-performance vehicle, and plenty of supercharged accessories. It makes the Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Magic general manager Otis Smith sound quiet.

What a joke. I especially find it hard to believe his 800hp M5 can hook up on a street better than an AWD Lamborghini of any model.

The V10 in the M5 is the exact opposite of "engine like something in NASCAR". What a douche.

"Dwight has a $300,000 car with 600 horsepower. I have a $150,000 car with 800 horsepower,'' he said. "Mine is like an airplane. It's something I've always wanted. I probably have the fastest car in Florida, maybe in the NBA.''

Urgh, he sounds as if as though he is a 7 year-old kid playing a copy of GT with his friend - "Mine has twentytwos more horsepowers than yours so mine is the fastest car there is yep"...

It sounds as if he has no idea about how cars actually work, and instead paid someone to make it go fast. Then he gets to talk about how fast it is. Despite the fact he claims to have been a part time mechanic...

I imagine his driving skills compare to his comprehension. Would be amusing to see how fast he can actually manage to get it down the strip.

he sounds like the PR guy talking up Forza 3.

it could maybe go 225? Yeah - for how long before the tyres desintegrate?

Probably have the fastes car in florida? Oh, I'm sure theres a Veyron or Koenigsegg somewhere

Doesn't know a thing, and as someone pointed out on the site, before he bought an M5 and did it up, how much did he donate to charities? Oh sure, he's entitled to do whatever he wants with his money, but to put an extra 300hp in that M5 (i wnt dyno figures before I believe that. I doubt 800 makes it to the wheels) could have built a whole village with infrasructure and farming land in a 3rd world country, given the gift of sight to many and fed a couple hundred aswell.

oh - and I could write a better article than that. All those references about felling the power brought it down.

And if you give up your PS3 and PC and spend the rest of your time working, you can feed ten third-world families for a year.

His money, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. If American businessmen can justify spending billions of dollars on what is basically entertainment television and yet contribute a paltry portion of that sum to poverty alleviation, I don't think we should be slighting a single guy who came from a relatively poor eastern European country for spoiling himself with a little toy to occupy his time with. (600, I'd believe... 700... maybe... 800? Depends on what pistons he's got in the thing).

Especially not when other guys in the NBA are driving Lamborghinis. :D

Oh, I'm even sure there's a true 7-second Street Legal car hiding in those swamps that this balla doesn't even know of.

Well, I agree he sounds like a douche, but it's his money. If he did the work himself, even half of it, then he gets some credibility back. But only some. Even if he did it all himself, he still sounds like a douche.

He made no mention of street legality here, so I'll just have to direct him to the nearest drag strip. He'll get smoked.

well props to him for being one of the few with plenty money to not get the usual sportscars/ferraris/lambos/bentleys/yawns whatever even if it is a bmw.
would love to see him smoked by something deceptively awesome though :p

I'd say Joe's GTTT is faster with nearly 1300hp. Granted I don't know if Joe lives in Florida but Stage 6, the company that built it, is in Florida. For you that don't know Joe...

Apparently, he doesn't think these owners exist.

It's not a World Record just because a guy in a vid says it is.

Check that thread.

I'd like to see him say that every time the ALMS crowd roll into Sebring.

Setting a time in the QTR mile doesn't make you the fastest car in the world, just the fastest in 1/4 of a mile.

This B-Ball player needs to bring his M5 out to the Texas Mile. We'll see how fast he really is.

it is a world record, as for what record exactly, i do not know. it was quite big news, for anybody who lived in the bradenton-sarasota area at the time. (that's into drag racing at all)

that other video looked like the car had slicks on (i.e. not street legal, but i didnt see the tires close up

doesnt matter, 800hp isnt anywhere near the fastest street car in FL

@reventon - the "fastest car in the world", last i knew, went well over 700mph
