The Targa Newfoundland just finished up (and ate an Enzo). And it got me to thinking it might be fun to try and do a Mille Miglia slash Targa style road rally experience.
Of the user-created venues Toscana has the best feel to it so that's why I originally jumped onto "Targa Toscana" as the theme.
Some of the basic ideas I'm kicking around:
Tracks:
* 1 lap per stage so it doesn't feel like a circuit race
* grid start (none of that delayed stagger of dirt rally)
* Each "stage" randomly generated so no one has an advantage ... or pre-generated and organized to maximize fun, keep track of distances, and have the ability to run multiple car classes in different race rooms on the same pavement.
Personally I really would prefer the latter, but then everyone would have to trust me not to practice the tracks as I would also want to drive. But then one or two laps around the tracks to make notes and make sure they're *sane* isn't exactly practice; and I suppose a fair payment for all the administration effort.
Qualifying:
* required to grid the first stage but everything after that will have grid order determined by total time. (fastest first)
Format:
This would require a multi-day commitment; but it's all in one shot so I actually think it would be easier to schedule than the traditional "Honey, I'm going to be racing every Sunday night for the next 8 weeks" conversation.
I was thinking a good start would be a 3-day event over a weekend. Do quali and a couple stages on Friday night to get things going (maybe 200km), then cover the big distance Saturday and Sunday adding up to a nice round 1000 km rallye. Each day would consist of multiple races run back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-... you get the idea.
I was thinking it would be nice to have the races in the late-afternoon/early-evening and If the tracks aren't random sight-unseen; have a morning practice session. That way we can hit every stage that will be done that day for about 15min so everyone can take 2-5 laps to make some mental pace notes.
Damage:
Damage on Light would ensure that someone bonking you into a wall doesn't ruin you... but then damage on Heavy sounds like good nail-biting fun when you're bombing around on unfamiliar roads.
Cars/Classes:
I'm a big fan of the old time road ralley days (as illustrated by being inspired by the MM) so I'd naturally want a 'vintage' event with sweet old machinery (300SL, C1 Vette, E-Type, Alfas, etc...). And that would be my priority and what I would chose to drive in.
With enough interest though I think a modern-GT class for road cars would be de rigueur and possibility for a bonkers race-car class.
Time Table:
This would obviously take place AFTER my Ferrari Challenge (see sig /shamelessplug) series wraps up. Veterans Day (US) / Remembrance Day / Armistice Day... whatever they call November 11th in your country. Falls on a Friday this year; so that would probably be optimum.
Or maybe wait til thanksgiving weekend where most people have time off and are done with family stuff after Thursday... Open for debate.
Please discuss and express thy interest in my madness.
