The frustration of scratched DVD's is set to be a thing of the past, thanxs to TDK's innovative new coating that can survive the most severe of tests.
The Japan-based electronics giant has developed a tough polymer that renders DVDs practically invincible, and which could assist in bringing forward a new DVD date-storage technology.
The new polymer-coated DVDs are knowen as Armor Plated DVD media, and the name is no exaggeration - a test conducted by CNET saw a DVD with TDK's new coating survive a sustained attack with a screwdriver and permanent marker, with no effect on playability.
The addition of the polymer gives DVDs 100 times more scratch resistance then their predecessors.
The industry group behide a new DVD format known as Blu-ray Disc has also taken an interest.
Blu-ray technology emables a DVD to hold up to 50GB of data using the shorter wavelength of a blue laser rather then a red one; the information on the disk is then closer to the surface coating, however which makes it highly susceptible to damage.
With the new durable polymer coating the data is better protected; it could turn the dream of watching a library of films from one indestructible disc into a reality.
