Ive got no where with sony or PD so i'll ask here. Sometimes after I play the game for 45 mins to an hour my PS3 starts making a knocking sound and the game locks up then the screen goes black. I have to eject the disc, shut off the power from the back of the machine and restart everything. Sometimes I can put the disc back in and play for hours and sometimes it happens again within an hour. The odd thing is this never happens with any of my other games. I could go 3-4 hours on COD without a problem. I can leave the machine on all nite downloading from the sonystore without a problem. I can watch blu-ray after blu-ray movie without this happening. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similiar problem and how did it get fixed?

knocking sound = hard drive fail

If it sounds something like this:

Backup your stuff and get a new PS3 before this goes.

Hi, It sounds like the disc may be warped. Put it on a flat surface and press the center, near the hole. If it moves it may be warped too much for the laser to focus properly. This is usually caused by heat. If you have a warranty take the disc back.

If its just a bad hard drive couldn't he just install a new hard drive? I mean still back up all the save files but buying a new hard drive is a lot cheaper then a whole new PS3.

That would work but then you would have to open it up and risk screwing other stuff up. I got my PS3 for $140 and it's a Slim 120GB. There are deals everywhere, just look ;)

Well I didn't know you had to pop open the whole system on the slims. I got one of the old big PS3's that you just pop the little side door off and its right there. I upgraded mine from a 40GB to 500GB.

Edit: I guess it just all depends on which system the OP has.

I have a first gen PS3 with the 60Gb HD but I replaced the hard drive 2 years ago with a 500GB HD. If it was the hard drive it would make the noise all the time not "ONLY" when I am playing GT5. Like I said, I can leave it running for 12 hours straight downloading movies and it never makes a sound, the fan doesnt even speed up. It never does it when I play other games or watch disc based movies, only when I play GT5. If I had to render a guess I would say there is something in the information on the disc that trips something up in the tracking eye in the disc drive. The sound it is making could be the eye trying to track but stuck in a loop and not able to read the disc. I have also noticed that it always does it after I have completed a race and while it is adding my xp or credits won is when it always locks up and starts making noise. also the disc is not warped.
