So yes, I'm playing an advisor (like Tsuchiya to Initial D, or N.O.B. to Kaido Battle) to a buddy of mine who's writing a car racing story. His character drives a highly modified Plymouth/Chrysler Prowler, and we're trying to decide what sort of engine to use. our goal is 700 + HP, and he likes...exotic...designs. I've suggested a 4-rotor Wankel, ala 787B. Any of you got any other suggestions?

The stipulations is that it has to be somewhat realistic, and has to fit in the Prowler's engine bay. Oh, and a V-8 would probably be too "Normal" for his tastes.

So, aside from the 4-rotor, any suggestions?
 
Whats the car going to be used for? When you say it has to besomewha realistic, how much so? 700bhp in a Plymouth Prowler is already pushing it a bit imo, the car doesn't need that much power to go stupidly fast. Whats the biggest engine fitted in a Prowler irl? He could probably think along the lines of a BMW V10, or if he really wants something that can provide stupid power a supercharged AJP6 could do 700bhp with a few mods and would probably fir in a Prowler.

WE are talking a legalized open road race, Here, and antcs on certian stages above and beyond 200 MPH, with top speeds on the cars (track speed, of course) above 220. The idea is to make one of the stages like the ol' Wangan in Japan, less civilian traffic. And then, I might reccommend smaller "Handling-biased" cars to him, as well, for some of the other races he has planned.

By somewhat realistic, I mean, It bacisally has to fit in the Prowler without having to move any major bodypanels or firewalls. Money's no object, and this kid's character has built space-capable fighter jets. the guy understands science and technology, (case in point, his original idea of using a 850HP hydrogen Fuel cell was rejected for weight reasons) so I wouldnt' worry about him putting a cold fusion reactor in it.

Diesel might not be a bad idea. Easy to make stupid amounts of power.
 
Some kind of twin-turbo V6. More compact than a V8. Maybe a '90s era IMSA motor.
 
IMSA GTP might be enough to convince him, but I did already suggest the 2JZ-GTE and RB26DETT.
 
So large displacement two stroke is no good?

How about a Porsche flat 6?
 
OH, sorry for ignoring you, there.

the two-stroke idea might be better if it were smaller, like a V6. A V8 (other than the tiny 4.7 chrysler had) won't fit very well. A Porsche Boxxer motor, I think, might be too wide. Unless he put it in the trunk. Besides, we're consiedring a Ruf Rt 12 for one of the other characters.
 
If you want unusual how about three Ducati V-twins joined by a common crankcase making a compact yet powerful N/A V6?

In the interests of realism, what sort of racing is this Prowler going to compete in?
 
What about a turbocharged Slant Six? It would look awesome leaning out from under only one side of the Prowler's hood, and it's from a RWD Chrysler product. I think there was even an Australia-only model of the late-'60s Charger with a force fed S6 in it.

I'm not exactly sure what he plans, but I know that both Wangan-style highway racing (sans traffic) and Touge racing are going to be involved. I'm not sure if there can be multiple cars per driver, or only one. I'll ask that. Hell, I'll ask if he can come here...

How about a twin turbo V10? Straight out of a Hennesy viper, making well over 1000 hp

Cummings straight 6?
Supercharged Renisis?
Hydrogen powered BMW motor?
Flux capacitor?


im out of ideas for "odd" engines
 
Hennesy V10...takes up even more room than the standard Viper mill

Cummins....too heavy
Renesis...Might work...then again, I already suggested the R26B, that seems to be the leading choice right now.
Tried Hydrogen Fuel Cell...too heavy
Flux Capacitor...No good above 88 Miles Per Hour. We need to hit 220 on a track like Nardo, feasibly, 200 on a somewhat twisty interstate highway. We want to travel distance, not time.
