ROLLS-ROYCE/PACKARD MERLIN V-12

cf-Merlin2.jpg

One of the most famous aircraft engines of all time, it powered fighters, bombers, and is one of the most common warbird engines.

  • Powered the Lancaster, the Spitfire and most other British fighters.
  • Out-did the Allison at bomber altitudes.
  • Popular with Reno air racers and tractor pullers.
  • Powered the “Fighter that won the war,” the P-51-D Mustang
  • They. Sound. AWESOME!!! (Especially four on the same plane [Lancaster])
  • We might all be speaking German, Italian, or Japanese if this engine weren't as good as it was.

The Audi R10 TDI engine will also be prenominated, because it was mentioned in the tens thread accidentally.

Nominations Criteria:
  • ONE NOMINATION PER MEMBER. (Including me)
  • Must be 12 Cyl. Gasoline or Diesel engine
  • May be race, street, Aircraft, Marine, whatever
  • May be any configuration, except Radial.
  • Try giving some good reasons.
  • Engines/families are pretty much grouped by Manufacturers’ classifications, and by how interchangeable parts are. Wikipedia will be extensively used in these judgments.

Current Nominees
Aston Martin V-12
Audi R10 TDI 5.5L diesel race V-12
BMW/McLaren S70/2,/3 V-12 (McLaren F1)
Bugatti EB110 3.5L Quad-Turbocharged 60V V-12

Gah. James beat me to it!

the v12 out of Jay Leno's tank car

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
that thing sucks. it dosn't fit most places and will barely move. anyways
Aston martin V12 found in such great cars as the Vanquish and the DB9!
great howler of a motor!

Ford's Lincoln-Zephyr V12 in 4.4 L, 4.8 L and 5.0 L. Based on the flathead V8. 110 hp w00t!

Did a chrylser engine beat a ferrari engine for V8s?

V12s huh?

Nobody has nominated the Colombo V12 (and F12, though techincally a 180 degree V12) yet? Somebody definately should! Though im not...

I nominate the Dino V12, or more specifically the Tipo F140. Found in the Maserati MC12 and Ferrari Enzo, and a heavily modified version in the 599 GTB.

Do not be so judgemental about other people's choices. I could say that the Aston Martin V12 sucks because it is a couple of V6's out of some Taurus.

Anyways, if you have to ask what I am going to vote for, you haven't been paying attention:
Bugatti EB110 3.5L Quad-Turbocharged, 60V V12
EB110_eng.jpg

561 BHP@8000 RPM, 450 lb.ft.@3750 RPM. 8200 RPM redline. And that was the slow one. Pure Awesome.

So we have one nomination? Don't consider this my final, but I'm putting it up for people to think about and discuss. Ferrari Type 125 (250cc/pot, 3L) for the 250 series. Also the quad-cam 275cc/pot motor from the 275GTB/4.

...Had to vote for the Carrera GT's V10 simply on sound alone. If you haven't heard it, you haven't heard true music. The car is simply amazing to hear, and although my times have been limited to two, it is simply an amazing sound...

On the V12:

I have to drag the Mercedes 6.0L Twin-Turbo V12 into the mix. The engine simply is the engine of Odin himself... Crafted by the hammers of Thor! What more can I say other than the power of the engine simply is unmatched today, and given the wide ranges of models that they can be found in (not to mention the different specs, 600 and 65 series), they make for outrageously fast cars.

...Just thinking about an SL65 makes me drool...

Having 604 BHP and 738 ft/lbs is simply amazing from any engine, the best part about the engine for me being the torque... Having power in any gear.

Of course my favorite of all the V12 TT models has to be either of the S-Class variants, the S600 or the S65. Even with "just" 510 BHP and 612 ft/lbs in the standard S600, the car still rips to 60 MPH well under 5 seconds, and will hapily accelerate from 60-120 without breaking a sweat.

...Beautiful engine, beautiful sound (although against a Merlin, thats tough competition), and the POWA!!!

JCE3000GT
You beat me to it. So I nominate the AMG twin-turbo 6.0L V12 from the "65" series AMG cars.
:sly:

had to vote porsche.

teh mist sublime V10 engine ever. period.

as for the v12s, tehres nowt worth nominating that hasnt already.

itll be a hard choice for me between the merlin engine and the maclaren item.

A little surprised that no one has mentioned the TVR 7.7L V12

Even though it never saw production, that thing sounds sooooooo good. Not to mention all the power it makes NA'd. One of the best in my book

Voted for the V10 diesel too:D

W's OK?

If so, stick the VAG W-12 in the Phaeton & S8 on the list.

How about the 5.3L V12 in the series 3 E-type

The Ferrari Colombo V12.

800px-1961_Ferrari_250_TR_61_Spyder_Fantuzzi_engine.jpg

The motor that brought Ferrari into the eyes of the world, powered some of its most legendary sportscars, and had an incredibly long career, lasting into the 1980s. It powered such cars as:
-Both Testarossas (Original and 80s)
-The 125 Series
-250 series
-275 series (in the DOHC GTB/4, it made 330HP N/A out of a 3.2l motor.... in 1967!)
-The Daytona
-The 512 Series.

All in all, probably the most influential and significant V12 in automotive history.

Here's some info and pictures on another (little known) use of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.

John Dodd's "The Beast"

Good call Nick 👍 - i saw the Merlin engined Rover SD1 in that link at the Historic Racing Car Show last Jan - When its finished you'll never know whats under the bonnet (and some of the interior!) from the outside - the ultimate sleeper?

For me it's got to be between the Columbo V12 (scruffy detective and engine designer!) and the RR Merlin.

Indeed they do, however, the 512 motor, while flat, is still actually based on the Colombo design, albeit quite evolved and modified.

I think, though, when you go entirely different configuration, you can't count it as one engine. If so, we might as well re-do the Eight-cyl vote, and mashup all the Smallblocks, although there's little-to-no parts interchangability.

Agreed...otherwise the Mopar 360 V8 and Viper V10 would be counted as the same...also the Gen 1 Chev 350 and Chev 4.3 V6!
