Gran Turismo HD forerunner to new next-gen GT
Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi tells Famitsu that PS3 game is merely a taste of what's to come; title finalized.

Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the next Gran Turismo title in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. There were two points of interest in the article. First, the parenthetical "working title" has been dropped from the name, implying that Gran Turismo HD is indeed the final title. Second, while Yamauchi lavished praise on the game's high-definition graphics, he stated that the game was not the true next-gen heir to the popular racing series' crown.

In the article, Yamauchi called Gran Turismo HD a "port" of the data from Gran Turismo 4, upgraded to take advantage of the PlayStation 3's graphical capabilities. He also said it is "a step in the process of developing a next-generation GT game."

Yamauchi also implied that development on that next-gen game is already under way, albeit at an early stage. "We are working on a version of GT that supports the full PS3 specification," Yamauchi said, adding, "but in this transitional version, I think you'll get a taste of the potential that next generation games hold."

Yamauchi said the idea for the game actually came from an unlikely source, the Photo Mode in GT4, which allowed players to take high-resolution stills. "I thought it would be incredible to see these stills animated in real time," he said. Running at 60 frames per second in 1920x1080p resolution, Gran Turismo HD supports the very highest resolutions available to Japan's newest HD televisions, according to Famitsu.

ouch.... didn´t like this one... i know we will have a brand new GT5, but this is disapointing... maybe sony pushed PD to do this?

so sorry, didn´t saw the other thread, i was mad about this...

once again, sorry, mods, lock this thread please

:dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

I don't see why this is so terrible.

Work that has been done on GT5 already could be incorporated into GT HD. It may be a breeeze (doddle in British) to do. GT HD itself was done in just a few weeks.

For that matter, GT4 with functioning online play, better graphics and many more cars on track would be a great improvement. I've enjoyed Forza quite a bit, and just having TWO more cars on the track makes the field seem surprisingly larger. Just imagine twice the field of cars in GT4, or more. And no screen flicker? I'd enjoy the heck out of that.

And don't forget that millions of people with PS2s would be locked out of GT4 Online. Many have PS2s like mine which are supposed to work with the broadband adaptor, but won't. Add that to the millions who flat out won't work online, and that market is crippled. Why would we buy a GT4 Online?

On top of all that, I'd rather have a Gran Turismo game in some fashion than no GT5 for a year or longer.

Having seen your other post, I'm glad that you don't feel so shocked or betrayed by Sony, but I did want to put this in perspective for those who saw this thread.

Couldn't agree more !... Just getting more cars on the grid would make the 24 hour races sooo much more interesting on the larger courses !..

Ohh.. Of course - Nice graphics to boot would be good too !... ;-)

i was thinking and yes, this can still turn out to be good.

sony just has to make sure to the press and the public that this is not GT5... prologue didn´t hurt then, if they take a similar aproach, fans will not be pissed...

maybe a friendly retail price also? since this is running with GT4 engine... at 39,99 seems reasonable...

As I said in the other thread I really dont think its worth having this "prologue" type game..... the other prologue was a different story because it was a huge jump from the previous GT, this is just a port... and the same cars and tracks wont really tempt me..... even if it has bikes and online racing..... and knowing PS3 game prices its probably going to cost atleast the same price as GT4 and I dont really want to spend the money on the same game...

Oh and I just realised..... THIS IS MY 2000th POST!!! Yipeee.....

I don't think Polyphony would release GT HD unless there were a few improvements over GT4. One thing I noticed with GT HD from the E3 show was that the crowds were animated. Those people were actually milling around! I have a feeling that this was code stripped out of the original GT4 engine so the game would run smoothly on the PS2. But in order for GT HD to be a viable game and not just GT4 with more resolution, I think Polyphony will have to make sure it includes features such as these:

- More cars on track, at least the 12 that were in the E3 demo on asphalt, and 4 on dirt and snow
- Additional cars and a new track or so, even if it's a track from GT2
- More refined physics
- Online play
- Unique features added from GT5 such as human-like bot A.I., racing mods, perhaps a paint shop, improved upgrade system, new racing modes, etc.

I agree that a straight port of GT4 wouldn't be any different from simply playing the PS2 game on the PS3. But with the prestige of both Polyphony Digital and Sony on the line, and competition from Forza 2 which is looking verry good, I expect that "Gran Turismo Series" will be a darn good PS3 game. And a consumer friendly price would be nice, but I'd pay $50 for it.

Oh, and one more thing. Since the PS3 games are going to be released with one SKU, I'm hopeful that this time, FINALLY, we'll see a Gran Turismo in the glorious original form it was meant to have, without silly theme songs like "Are you goin' my way" or "Panama." Which... okay, they're not that bad, but darn it, I want to hear "Moon Over the Castle!" :D
