I was trying to do the 300KM Grand Valley endurance race with my Tesla Roadster (stupid idea, I know), but found that the time it spends in the pits is horrific. My first time in the pits, I dropped to 3rd place (from 1st). Second time in the pits, I dropped to 7th place (from 1st). Third time in the pits, I dropped to 8th place (from 3rd) and 1 lap down. As the vehicle had to pit in every 14 laps due to low battery (roughly 45 mile range, as far as I can tell), I was spending more time trying to catch back up than actually leading the race.

Are the pit stops really supposed to take a ridiculously song time with the Tesla?

Thats quite realistic actually. In real life, electric cars take way longer to recharge (on the order of a couple hours.. I do not remember the exact figure for Teslas supercharger though) than gas cars do to refill, which we all know in a race can be done in a few seconds.

Even with the "high powered wall connector" a Tesla takes 4 hours to recharge. I'm sure you'll agree that this is one of those rare occasions that specs not being real to life is alright. :p

I noticed that the Tesla pit time depends on the race, looks like a bug. In some race it take just the time to change tires and in some other races it takes forever. I also noticed that some times it takes less time if I use the Citroen Concept car before in the same track!!!! I also noticed that, on the races it takes longer PIT time, is because the guy with the gas tank try to fill it... weird! On the races it take less time this guy never tries to fill it with gas. With the Citroen this guy just stay aside ALWAYS and never tries to fill the Citroen. I believe there is a bug with the Tesla that causes to fail recognize it is an electric car "sometimes". May be I am wrong any suggestion?

I doubt they could swap hundreds of pounds of batteries that fast. ;)
Renault are actually trialing a battery replacement service called 'Better Place', where you get your battery swapped in under a minute. This allows long distance journeys in EVs, so swapping them out isn't that far fetched in reality;)

Even the concept GT by Citroen has a very terrible fuel consumption. It has the same type of motor like the Tesla Roadster, but this time, that Citroen will only lasts for until after 15 laps at Daytona, full throttled and in top speed. You have to go to the pit stop so that you can get it going. I'm saying this because this is what I also have noticed with the Tesla Roadster compared to other cars with it's level.

But "Better Place" is flat broke... I think. Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually, yes, i've just looked into the business and they filed for bankruptcy a month or two ago. It's a shame really, because they chose to trial it in Israel of all places so no wonder they did no business. Still, it was a decent idea, and maybe the way forward instead of plugging it in?
