Test drive - Vehicle speed testing thread

KieranMurphy came up with the idea to combine the results for the two tests we where doing in the Favorite Car in San Andreas thread. It would make for some nice data about the cars in the game.

Here is my test again:
Im using the long San Fiero Airport runway (700 meters/0.44 miles) for my test. I line up the car at the end of the runway (north east) where the grass meets the asphalt, making sure that the nose on the car does not cross the line. The track is the black runway and the finish is where the black asphalt meets the light gray (south west). The unusual part is that you start on a patch of grass that has a minor downhill slope. Starting from the other side gives you a better time but then you would end up in the sea with a lot of the faster cars. This tests the cars for traction, acceleration and top speed, but good handling doesn't count for much.

It's preatty cool cause it's close to the driving school and the import/export boat is right next to it across the water so it doesn't take long to test new cars. Feel free to join in!

Added Top speed, weight and drivetrain for each vehicle that are supposed to be from the Handling.cfg file in the game. Check the GTA S.A. Car database at Gamefaqs.com for more detailed stats.

Here's the test I'm doing:

First of all I'm only using stock cars. Nitrous boosts aren't allowed.

I take the car to the sign over the Las Venturas ringroad just off the southern end of the Strip. I pull up and brake at the last minute just as minute on the clock is changing and when it goes to xx:00 I hit the gas. This is to prevent waiting around as a pileup happens and prevents you getting a clean start. I then do the full circuit without taking my foot off the gas and when I pass the same spot again I note the time difference. I'm only counting times where I get a clean run. Any crashes or spinouts and I do it again.

For motorbikes I'm doing 2 tests. One where I just ride the track normally, and one where I duck down for as much as I can to increase my speed. The ducking down isn't so accurate because it's hard to keep down when going around corners, so those times could be improved by a couple of seconds maybe.

Here's the times so far in order, average speed is given in km/h.

Thanks to Spuds725 for providing average speeds.

Great, I was hoping you would get the second post. 👍 Makes editing times a lot simpler if they are on the first page of the tread.

My CJ has been starving so much during the tests he now looks like he did at the start of the game. I'm off to Las Venturas to get some bikes.

nice, and can you do all 3 police cars :D, i want too see if they are the same

Nice thread--

Note to Rockstar---in future GTAs please include at least one free choice street race so we can get the comparison times down to the 100th of a second.

A 1 mile drag strip (with same free choice or cars) would be nice too.

A good idea also would be a big oval track for driving around.

Anyway, I tried the ringroad test with the Comet and got 2:00 so I'll edit it in now.

Yeah....whats with all these indoor tracks with races---hasn't Rockstar ever heard of Carbon Monoxide poisoning--- very dangerous.

An oval would be could for time trials and thats about it (IMO)...I'd much rather have a decent (NASCAR Style) race track with banked turns and 4 or 5 turns.....maybe I need to buy a different game.....kind of getting away from GTA....

Hey, KM....do you know off hand what the distance of your course is??? ---maybe I'll calculate out some average speeds for both of the courses for individual cars.

Just an idea....

You read my mind. It's a 5km course. I was about to calculate the average speed and add it to my post anyway.

NRG-500 is the fastest vehicle yet if you tuck Carl's head down behind the windscreen, it's running low-mid 16 seconds that way. I'm a bit dissapointed in the FCR-900, is not much faster then the PCJ-600. Sounds faster then it is.

Nice ideas about the dragstrip and oval, I wouldn't mind an auto-cross park to goof around in to :)

I think R* is putting those races indoor so that the game doesn't have to render all those things from the outside cause the game would run at 4 fps if they tried to run 12 A.I. cars + all the graphics on the outside, well thats my guess anyway.

Spuds, feel free to calculate the average speeds. I'm gonna do it so at least I'll know if the figures are right before I add them to the post.

No problem but it might be a bit to get a good list up (I'll get a temporary one up soon)-- I'm going to do it right and am a little busy this afternoon.

I'm on it. BTW its only now that I noticed that the L.V. Police car is different from the other two and not based on the Premier, R* might be using the model from Vice for that one? Only not green and white this time.

i believe the fcr is more of a top speed bike..

do you know what fps SA runs at under normal conditions? i would think 12 more cars wouldn't make much of a difference when you've got gobs of traffic and pedestrians already

Here are the sorted speeds (bikes shown with tucked and untucked) for the runway time trial--- for times with 2 I averaged (Example 18/19 I use 18.5) and then averaged the 3 runs--- these are not going to be very accurate for speed but should be accurate for comparisons between vehicles.

I will repost this in screenshot form later so it looks neater.

You're probably right about the FCR.

I think SA tops out at 30 fps, but don't take my word for it. It does't jump around alot when there is a lot going on, hitting single digits at some places like if there is a lot of action and explosions under the mulholland intersection in L.S.

This time trial should be more indicative of vehicles top speed but the shorter one should give a better indication of a combination of speed and acceleration.

Does anyone know if there's such a thing as a cheat to switch off traffic? I'd be willing to put aside one of my 100% games for this kind of thing and turn on and off the traffic for time trials as I see fit. It's a pain having to run the course 5 times in a row or more before getting round without being hit. When you're going that fast, even the tiniest brush with another car can sending you spinning out of control or right off the road into a wall.

that gives me an idea for the next GTA.. for each race (maybe after you get gold in the one with traffic you are able to compete in a version without traffic) there would be a version with and without traffic... i love racing but hate traffic.

A few new cars, that FBI Rancher sure took a while to get, I was camping the Secret Base to quickly get the 5 stars. Got busted a few times trying to steal their vans, usually they go for the kill so I wasn't expecting that, so I lost my guns cause I don't have whats-her-name as a girlfriend.

Policecars are very close in times, I'll probably run the San Fiero car again, doesn't make sense for it to be slower then the Santos car. Gut feeling say the Las Venturas is a fraction quicker then the Los Santos version.

Thanks for the average speeds Spuds, I'll put it in right away.

KM are you gonna do bikes?? also when i did my run around SA in the Sqaullo i avged 160kph, so the boats seem to be just as fast as the cars

I'll chase down the rest of the lowrider, but if anyone has any requests I'll snag one if I see it on the road. The list has grown bigger then I initially intended. I was just going to do the quick cars but then my curriosity got the better of me. :P

RancidMilk
There should be a little digital speedometer somewhere on the screen. I'd suggest directly above the mini map.
There is a Mod for the PC versions of GTA 3 and Vice City that has this. I've never considered it very useful until now.

2:03 for the SuperGT.

Any other cars I should try out? I don't have all gold in driving school so I can't tryout the Hotknife.

I might move on to trying out cars like the Jester, Buffalo, etc.

edit: I might just do cars as I come across them. I just did 2:26 with the Stratum.
