Ahhh yes, A highly anticipated car. The car in which, that could indeed bring toyota out of its "sport-slump" and place them right back in the minds of Sport-Car enthusiasts every where.. lets take a quick look at the history shall we?

Toyota named it the GT86 in honor of the classic, face of drifting, AE86.

This car was quite succesful in it's time, very cheap, quite sporty, great handling, everything that a young gear head looked for. Put all that together and you're bound to find it on tracks and street race movies everywhere.:sly:

Forward to about 2 years ago, when Toyota starts teasing us with a new sports car many thought to be the next generation of Supra, and Supra Buzz begins. That all stopped when we got a taste of what the motor was going to be, A naturally aspirated Subaru STi motor. Which isn't a bad thing at all. Subaru (BR-Z) and Scion (FR-S) all have their variations of this car now.

Finally, we have it, the Full-Production Model, Toyota GT86, and lucky for us Polyphony Digitites we get a taste of the car first hand  .

First Drive Impressions:

As soon as the car starts to leave the pits, it sounds like the engine is going to be a drone, but when you really get on the Revs, it doesn't actually sound half bad.. :dopey:

Going into the first turn is when you are really ready to find for your self, if the car handles like expected.

Brakes are pretty good, but they should be, considering the car tips the scales at about 1230KG. As I was saying, into the 1st turn we go, tires are still cold keep in mind, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. The car grips very well either way, taking you exactly where the wheels are pointed. Mid corner the car couldn't be more neutral, as it really has minimal Body roll, and is very low to the ground, under 5cm above the ground in fact. Coming out of the turn the car really doesn't kick out at all in less you really try to.

Down the straights you may find yourself wanting a little more, but with the horsepower at hand it makes good use of it. Acceleration really starts to die off at about 120Mph+ which is very acceptable when reminded of what kind of power-plant you have in front of you. On the Nurburgring the highest me, or our Other Test Drivers got up to was 140Mph, not to shabby.

At highspeed the handling does seem a bit disturbed though, instead of a little understeer in a highspeed turn, the trunk wants to get ahead of you. Going up-hill doesn't fair to well for the GT86 due, not just to the limited horse power at hand, but the complete lac of torque, peak torque is 154 ft/lbs, and you don't find them in the low RPM either. Hopefully PD doesn't expect is to tow anything with them:dunce: ..

Numbers
0-60: 5.9 seconds
1/4 mile: Un-Availible (Road Coarse Indy Drag Strip) We Were Un-Able to get a timed run at Indy, but the trap speed was 94 MPH @ best.
Now for the Time we Have all wanted to know.

Nurburgring Lap Time: 8:26.782

I hoped you enjoyed reading this first test 👍

I'd like to thank Jesse208 and nick_liz (GTP: NiCkLiZ) for helping gather performance data.👍

I drove 2 laps with comfort soft and my best lap time was 8:57, it just has so much grip even with comfort soft tyre, I'm loving this car's handling, it feels like lotus evora
I've always known that Toyota is capable of making good sports car if they haven't wasted their resources on hybrid system

Nice review. Ive driven it and it was just slightly tail happy on turn in. I do t know if you found this. I am very aggressive though. And why the big writing.

Yeah, I was driving vary conservatively during the Timed laps, but when I was just messing around with it, it will kick out a fair amount, VERY controllable slides though. 👍

Way too boring with the SH tyres, I agree that CS are more appropriate, and I'm afraid it really lacks a bit of power and grunt. But it's quite light on its feet and the lack of weight translates well into agile handling and a certain air of tight control.

I really loved the Sports version of the Concept, and I can overlook that such a fancy interior is not fit for mass production, but the production GT 86 just is a bit, hm, dull? Tame? Predictable? It could do with a few more nods to the LF-A.

Anyway, glad it's in the game, will have to spend a bit more time with it and even upgrade it a bit - a thing I usually never do.
