Odd as the title sounds, this will be a test of the vehicles in or around the same niche as the Lotus Elise.

Cars include the:

ASL Garaiya
Hommel Berlinette R/S
Lotus Elise (The one with 189 hp)
Tommy Kaira ZZ
Toyota MR2 SC ('86)

As well as a few others.... If anybody would mind suggesting the first test, I am all ears.

All vehicles are tuned around 200-210 hp, and varying weights to keep around the same P/W ratio

I think it will be a good test, but what happened to the Ultimate Muscle Car Challenge? You haven't tested the cars at Infineon yet (or at least you haven't told us).

Don't use a long track. Infineon is always nice. How about Citta d' Aria? A really nice mix of tight corners and narrow straights should sort out these cars nicely.

Put in the Caterham, too... I'm not sure about including the MR2. It's a bit big for the competition... as is the Hommell.

Citi d'Aria, and then Monaco be okay?

As far as the SC MR2 and the Berlinette, I removed weight as necessary to try and make them competitive.

Some other factors I may throw in are total cost, driving excitement, exterior styling, ride, brakes, steering, engine, gearbox, and the usual regimine of performance tests. Any questions?

add in "weather protection" to the comparo, and you're all set. :)

 Now let's not go too far here...

Don't worry guys, results will be in in a few days... I started my new job.

For any of those who appreciate the work of Old Geezer, Der Alta, or Uncle Harry, Congrats! You have stumbled upon the perfect, in-depth thread! For those of which who love short romps... turn away, or bear with me here. It gets very long winded from here on out. Sorry. Also, as a heads up, I did have to throw a couple catagories out to end with a nice round number of points...

The catagories used:

Handling/ 20 pts

Acceleration/ 20 pts

Exterior Styling/ 20 pts

Braking/ 20 pts

Gearbox/ 20 pts

0-60/ 50 pts

0-100/ 50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria/ 100 pts

Lap of Monaco/ 100 pts

Price/ 200 pts

9th Place

Lancia Stratos
468/600 points

206 hp
PWR: 4.471
Base Price: 133,970
Price As Tested: 142,220
Lap at Citi: 1'44.006
Lap at Monaco: 1'58.337

Handling 18/ 20 pts

Acceleration 19/ 20 pts

Exterior Styling 20/ 20 pts

Braking 19/ 20 pts

Gearbox 18/ 20 pts

0-60 50/ 50 pts

0-100 48/ 50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 99/ 100 pts

Lap of Monaco 100/ 100 pts

Price 77/ 200 pts

Price is what really killed this car in all the subjective catagories... only 77 points out of a possible 200. It won the catagories of Exterior Styling, 0-60, and Lap of Monaco, and was usually one or two points from the other catagories...

8th Place

Renault R5 Turbo
481/600

204 hp
PWR: 4.473
Base Price: 74,000-ish
Price as Tested: 91,974
Lap at Citi: 1'45.031
Lap at Monaco: 2'06.474

Handling 16/ 20 pts

Acceleration 17/ 20 pts

Exterior Styling 17/ 20 pts

Braking 18/ 20 pts

Gearbox 19/ 20 pts

0-60 41/ 50 pts

0-100 44/ 50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 98/ 100 pts

Lap of Monaco 93/ 100 pts

Price 118/ 200 pts

Only thing that saved this car from last place was its price as tested score. Not that this car is very bad, but it is rather sloppy in the corners, as shown in the Handling Bracket score.

7th Place

Hommell Berlinette R/S
485/600

201 hp
PWR: 4.303
Base Price: 47,360
Price as Tested: 100,010
Lap at Citi: 1'45.592
Lap at Monaco: 2'03.391

Handling 17/20 pts

Acceleration 17/20 pts

Exterior Styling 18/20 pts

Braking 20/20 pts

Gearbox 18/20 pts

0-60 46/50 pts

0-100 46/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 98/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 96/100 pts

Price 109/200 pts

Not the best, but sota consistent. The Berlinette showed it's true prowess when the brakes were clamped.

6th Place
Lotus Motorsport Elise
502/600

204 hp
PWR: 3.424
Base Price: 97,180
Price as Tested: 97,180
Lap at Citi: 1'43.452
Lap at Monaco: 2'03.066

Handling 19/20 pts

Acceleration 20/20 pts

Exterior Styling 20/20 pts

Braking 20/20 pts

Gearbox 19/20 pts

0-60 46/50 pts

0-100 50/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 100/100 pts

Lap of Monaco /96100 pts

Price 112/200 pts

The Price bracket once again reared it ugly head and slaughtered a shoe-in for best of show. The Exige nearly annihilated any catagory that involved Turning, braking, or Acceleration...

5th Place
Toyota MR2 SC '86
516/600

207 hp
PWR: 4.555
Base Price: 17,443
Price as Tested: 74,343
Lap at Citi: 1'47.149
Lap at Monaco: 2'02.045

Handling 16/20 pts

Acceleration 17/20 pts

Exterior Styling 19/20 pts

Braking 17/20 pts

Gearbox 17/20 pts

0-60 44/50 pts

0-100 45/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 97/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 97/100 pts

Price 147/200 pts

This car is ver sloppy, and the ratings show it. Price saved it; notice a pattern here?

4th Place
Opel Speedster Turbo
524/600

210hp
PWR: 4.205
Base Price: 49,550
Price as Tested: 77,000
Lap at Citi: 1'43.642
Lap at Monaco: 2'00.186

Handling 18/20 pts

Acceleration 18/20 pts

Exterior Styling 17/20 pts

Braking 19/20 pts

Gearbox 20/20 pts

0-60 48/50 pts

0-100 45/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 100/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 98/100 pts

Price 141/200 pts

It was only little bits that took the Speedster down. One of the 3 Forced-induction cars, it oddly didn't show it prowess in it acceleration, but in its binders. It also proved to be one of the fastest at Citi, nearly tying the Exige.

3rd Place
ASL Garaiya
549/600

201hp
PWR: 3.987
Base Price: 65,000
Price as Tested: 65,000
Lap at Citi: 1'44.678
Lap at Monaco: 1'57.888

Handling 20/20 pts

Acceleration 17/20 pts

Exterior Styling 18/20 pts

Braking 20/20 pts

Gearbox 19/20 pts

0-60 43/50 pts

0-100 45/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 99/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 100/100 pts

Price 168/200 pts

Aceleration was not quite this cars forte. But, as soon as the wheel turned, there was a completely different story, as reflected by the scores in lap times, handling, and braking. Price also helped this car greatly.

2nd Place
Tommy Kaira ZZ-S
560/600

205 hp
PWR: 3.374
Base Price: 59,500
Price as Tested: 59,550
Lap at Citi: 1'43.473
Lap at Monaco: 2'02.631

Handling 17/20 pts

Acceleration 18/20 pts

Exterior Styling 18/20 pts

Braking 20/20 pts

Gearbox 16/20 pts

0-60 44/50 pts

0-100 48/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 100/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 96/100 pts

Price 183/200 pts

The car is very nice, but the gearbox is a tad slow shifting... Immediate aceleration is not exactly breathtaking, either.

1st Place
Lotus Elise 111R
582/600

202 hp
PWR: 4.263
Base Price: 54,410
Price as Tested: 54,460
Lap at Citi: 1'44.324
Lap at Monaco: 1'58.219

Handling 19/20 pts

Acceleration 18/20 pts

Exterior Styling 17/20 pts

Braking 19/20 pts

Gearbox 18/20 pts

0-60 46/50 pts

0-100 46/50 pts

Lap of Citi d'Aria 99/100 pts

Lap of Monaco 100/100 pts

Price 200/200 pts

Well? What didn't this car own at? It's worse catagorie was only 4 points off. Price seriously helped here, too. It gained 17 points on the next car here, alone. This just goes to show: There are no pretenders. Either it's real-deal, or you are getting ripped off.

So, what do you guys think of this mega-write-up??? Get back to me on this. I'm eager for feed-back. :D

Nice. Seems your comparo is in agreement with most magazine editors' assessment. The 111R is the best bang for the buck lightweight.

BTW, I was just kidding about the Caterham, but the fact that you can't use it to race automatically disqualifies it anyway... :)

I'm surprised that you gave the Stratos the short shaft for its price! Did you score the price as absolute, on scale, or square-rooted? I know C&D always does some funky to their price comparo to level the playing field.

The Price value was derived from the cheapest vehicle, the Lotus, and dividing it by the next vehicle's price, and finally multiplying it by 200.

(Like this: 54,460/142,220 x 200) This resulted in the final score, about 77. :) There is a method to this madness.
