Let's look at a simple timeline:
E3 2005 - XB360 six months away, PS3 one year away. This pretty much negates the "But MS had playable demos" argument, since MS did NOT have playable demos six months ago, when THEY were a year out. Common sense dictates that XB developers will be further along than PS developers. Side-by-side comparisons are useless.
TGS 2005 - XB360 one month away, PS3 six months away (give or take). I think MS may actually outshine Sony here, simply because the games are practically complete, running on final hardware, ready-to-go. And yet here... HERE... is where it comes to a head..
Once TGS is over, a new comparison can be made. The "six months out" side-by-side comparison... Sony's TGS showing compared to Microsoft's E3 showing. Comparing how the games and the system looked when BOTH were six months away from launch.
Of course, some people will not pay attention to any such comparison, especially if MS's offerings are more impressive than Sony's at TGS itself. They'll choose to compare final XB products to unfinished PS projects. But that's okay... we'll know the truth, those of us who are able to put aside the fanboyism. And if Sony's TGS offerings are more impressive than MS's TGS offerings, we'll have a whole new brand of OMGWTFCGI arguments to keep us occupied.
Either way, it should be an interesting time.
