GTMSA Presents

The Tour of GT4

Stage 6: Grand Canyon

Special Conditions: 4 Lap Race

Deadline 11.59pm GMT Sunday 19th September

picture.php

After blasting around the roads of El Capitan we move in to the mountains proper and on to the dirt of the Grand Canyon. This will likely prove to be the toughest challenge of the whole Tour and also is the first cup event that can be wrapped up if Austin343 takes the win.

Feel free to discuss sector times but please don't mention lap times or total race time.

General Information and Regulations

All rules, regulations, car specifications, and races are controlled by TGT4 sanctioning body, GTMSA. Any and all questions should be directed to GTMSA officials (namely me ABud) and officials will do their best to answer in a timely and accurate manner.

All drivers must run at the specified weights and horsepower settings provided by GTMSA for each round.

  • Standard Online Racing Rules Apply.
  • No Cheating, hybrids, etc. You must run the car specifications I give you
  • Try keeping at least 2 wheels on course. Long races = small mishaps, but absolutely NO shortcuts
  • No wall-riding as well. Combined with penalties, this will slow you down considerably, so don't do it.
  • All decisions by GTMSA officials are final
  • Curbs/rumble strips count as track

If a driver doesn't manage to submit a time for a particular stage a penalty time will be assigned, calculated as follows:

110% of the slowest time.

Eg. If the slowest time is 19'25.346 the penalty time for all non submitting racers will be:

21'00.365

Also if a driver joins the series part way through their GC time for the races missed will be calculated in the same way

This one is really, really hard. :scared: Along with the difficulty of staying off of the walls on such a narrow course, the "slow" dirt on the inside of some corners can suck you right around if you don't tread carefully. That's not to mention that the AI cars are next to impossible to pass, but are slow at the same time, so you'll more than likely end up getting stuck behind one, blinded by dust, for all four laps. I see two viable options: entering and exiting until you get the '02 WRX, which is fast enough not to get in the way quite as much as the rest of the AI cars; or finding the Evo V and passing it on the first lap on the beginning of the straight with all of the jumps, which is a low-percentage move but is the only possible pass of an AI car that I've been able to execute.

So far, my best race is one spent behind the '02 WRX, although I did hit walls four times, which is too many for my taste. I also once finished a race without spinning or otherwise heavily crashing after passing the Evo V, but presumably because of losing my rhythm after so many restarts, it ended up significantly slower. :ouch: I'm still not sure which option to pursue, as both are aggravating - the former because you're driving blind and have to tread carefully in order to avoid contact, and the latter because you have to restart a lot in order to execute the pass cleanly, and then become a nervous wreck for the next three and a half laps as you drive in constant fear of crashing and having to restart many more times in order to complete the pass again.

Thats good to know, means for most people (well namely myself) the ai should disappear into the distance and wont be an issue.

(edit)
After having some practice, ill confirm that the ai isn't an issue for me, visibility is low for first 3 corners, but then its fine, ps that "slow" dirt on the inside of some corners is great for slowing the car down.

A tough course to be sure. But all I can think is how much fun Viperin and I would have if this track was in Tourist Trophy. Actually get to use the dirt bikes in the game for something. :)

edit: Tried this one a second time after finishing up the WGT3RS over at SSR5. Guess all the sliding in the Merc helped. Knocked off 21 seconds from first try. Mainly staying out of touble and away from the loose dirt at the 180 turn before T2. Hit that twice on previous try. And stopped dead. A couple of minor rubs, and didn't worry about the AI. Would have beat him if I could have gotten him to use: AI tyres are Sports Medium But all he wanted to use was Dirt.

Time submitted.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuugh! I've never been any good at Grand Canyon and that's still the case. The AI was no problem at all, he was miles ahead! Not sure if I can bear another go, I'm going to lose a huge amount of time here tho!

I eventually decided to give up on this one - I just wasn't going fast or staying off the walls. So I'm submitting what I have, which is a race with somewhere between two and four wall contacts (it's hard to tell at some points on this course). Since I'm leaving tomorrow, I also have each of the next six races done and the recordings of the races moved onto my computer, so I'll still be able to finish the series. :)

Good luck at school.

Time Submitted

(so i'm not tempted to spend more time today trying to lower it)

Only 4 very minor brushes with the wall, and i'm fairly happy with the time, though i did do a faster run, but there was to much wall contact for my liking to submit it.

I'm going to rename this challenge 2nd gear throttle control, because i was in 2nd gear 90% of the time, and on partial throttle for a fair bit of that.

Unlike you. I was tempted to try again. Even after submitting. Had a very good 2nd and 3rd lap. Both with significant improvements but then had not one but two penalties in lap 4 which negated the whole improvement. So I went back and tried S-10. Hadn't gotten Gold yet. But now I do. So it was worth the extra practice.

After driving the Elise for a while, the car you use in that test (4wd Starion from memory) will definitely feel a lot easier to control, also only having to do one lap helps, Kudos on the gold.

Submitted.

This was an easy event for me to enjoy. I was able to make drastic improvements in my time and was able to put enough distance between the calamities to make the experience positive.

Here's my race. :) It's hardly my best driving, particularly with the wall contacts (sorry for that), but despite not even using the same gear in a couple of corners from lap to lap, it was still my best complete race.

Nice race Austin!

I can only marvel at your car control:bowdown:

Staying that close to the AI was amazing! The video doesn't do justice to the dust that you must have been driving thru most of the race. Well done!

Ditto that. All while getting the perverbial sand kicked in your face.
