"Thanks" System?

I've been using GTP for quite some time now and love it! But one thing is slightly bothering me. I mod on some other forums and on almost all of them, they have a "Thanks" system in which a "Thanks" button is placed at the bottom of each post next to the "Quote" button. If one person clicks it, it would "Thank" the poster showing that his comment helped someone. I would find this most useful in acknowledging other people posts. It would also reduce "clutter" of people posting "+1" or "Thanks!!".

Jordan tried a karma/rap system in the past and it was taken advantage of. People did 'rep for rep' and gave negative rep to anyone they didn't like. I guess the 'thanks' button will be taken advantage of as well with 'thank for thank's.

Well I see why a +/- rating system would encounter some bumps but this is mainly target at people who have contributed, answered people's questions and being overall active members. At my other forum it doesn't get abused at all. The only problem I saw was people putting "HIT THE THANKS BUTTON" in their signatures in bold, underlined and 1000pt font, but we can easily make a rule against that in the AUP.

This is what I thought. The majority of people in this thread is smart enough to never do such things, but they are times where some would abuse the system and use it as an advantage.
 
There are quite a few fair people who wouldn't abuse such a system, but there are loads of people who come and go and don't show much respect for the forums who would abuse the system

We have rules about grammar in the AUP. These rules still get broken.
We have rules about profanity in the AUP. These rules still get broken.

I think you see where I'm going with this.

While I agree that most follow the rules, it's the couple that don't that ruin it for the rest of us.

To the best of my knowledge, Jordan has no plans to (re)instate a(nother) rep system.
 
I do miss my "Quality Posts" badge, but I've seen rep abuse and I've seen rep abuse. I've seen people form cliques to rep each other. Team-mates will rep each other for no other reason than to rep. And if someone posts a sweary rant against car duplication or using all-wheel drive cars in drift rooms, he's bound to get a whole bunch of +rep answers.

That's not to mention the split personality types who create duplicate accounts just to rep themselves... :lol:
 
I think its a good idea and i think the moderators on this site are pretty good and fast so i think Jordan should reconsider using it again.
 
Though user "reputation" isn't something I plan to bring back, single-post "Liking" is something under consideration if/when I move the site to a platform that supports it as a core feature.
 
Yeah, i think going the way of Facebook is a better idea than a reputation system again (which i wasn't too fond of - not that i ever got any negative rep to my knowledge).

If a post is a good one, members could simply click 'I Like this post', "Ths p0st is t3h r0xourz', or maybe even "'Like' this post".

I don't think having a list of names of those who liked it would be the best idea in terms of server load (maybe), but maybe just listing the amount of likes it has would suffice.

But yeah, its a feature forums (including my own) seem to be lacking in this day and age of the Facebook generation. ;)

I agree. Lots of times I am going through the different tuning threads, searching through all the "Thx!!" and "Love this tune!!" to actually find the tunes. In my head would be a lot easier to click a button than to actually type out "Thanks". 👍
