So it's just around the corner. We're all thankful for something, but that's not what this thread is about.

Nope, I want pictures. Pictures of the Turkey day dinner spread. You're all going to eat too much and you watch too much TV. The family will be hectic, the trashing of the house will be legendary (until next year).

Show us the carnage. Before, during, after... Before the before part. How big is the turkey. Lobster?

I'll be posting "before" pictures tonight, as I begin the boozing and cooking. Prep the potatoes tonight. Final last minute cooking.

Through in your thoughts on cooking the turkey. I use Bacon grease. :D I'll cook up 2 Lbs of bacon tonight for the grease tomorrow morning. Plus, Bacon & Mayo sandwiches are great for a hangover. Especially so when you've got so much to do in the morning.

Things of Note that happen. Unexpected guests, unexpected gifts. Note worthy toasts given. All the good stuff.

(Yes, I know that people outside of the USA don't celebrate this holiday)

Can I ask what Thanksgiving actually is? Is it a made up day like Valentines Day, is it religious? What's the point? And why doesn't everyone have it?

Wikipedia
Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Action de grâce in French),is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks (traditionally to God) at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. In Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday in October. In the United Kingdom, Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in churches across the country on a relevant Sunday to mark the end of the local harvest, though it is not thought of as a major event (compared to Christmas or Easter) as it is in other parts of the world. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers, where it became much more important.

Thanksgiving information

Lots of info about Thanksgiving there. hope it helps

Spec....

Well, my preperation pictures will pretty much involve me driving to other people's houses. I will have pictures of the spread though. It will be Monday before I can put them online as I have a second family dinner on Saturday.

Omnis, I could have lived without the hairy legs.

Omnis, I could have lived without the hairy legs.

Agreed.

Yes, Casio, Thanksgiving Day was a big deal to early settlers of North America, especially American settlers. They had a pretty rough time with agriculture back then, obviously lacking the abundant tech of today, so when they hit it big, and even if they didn't, they thought it appropriate to celebrate the delicious food the God allowed them. Nowadays, at least in my eyes, it's just a time to pig out and chill with the whole family. But there's nothing wrong with that, eh?

I'll see what I can do about pictures, but imagine this if you will:
  1. My wife just purchased a turkey fryer. Fire potential: HIGH.
  2. I have a 2.5 year old and 1 year old son. There will be a mess.
  3. The in-laws are coming! The in-laws are coming! There will not be gifts. They will not contribute to the meal. Or the conversation.
  4. Due to their previous track record, they will bring at least one person with them that we don't know.
  5. Or they just won't show up at all and not bother to call. Again.
  6. She's making two pies for 8 people. Yummy!
Edit:
How could I forget Football on the new HDTV???

we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Austria, so i can't put up some pics.......

Awesome! 👍

I'm going to the Macy's Thanksgiving parade because my little cousin HAS to see all the attractions :indiff:. After that, we'll go home and I'm probably gonna have to pick up some relatives in the Bronx and then we come back home.

Tukey is the meal of the day of course (though I know some people will eat chicken :yuck: ) and I'll post some pictures here.

As far as work, today was "bagel day" and so will friday, people here looove to spend the bank money on food for everybody and stuff that we don't really need. But I don't complaint for that though :D

Ciao!

Just be smart with it and follow the directions. Fried turkey is the tastiest way to do it.

Due to their previous track record, they will bring at least one person with them that we don't know.
Hey, my Aunt is almost always housing a foreign student from the local seminary. Not only do we not know them but they don't speak English very well.

Or they just won't show up at all and not bother to call. Again.
Considering everything else you said about them would you really care? Fake being upset for your wife and then go watch football.

She's making two pies for 8 people. Yummy!
And if they don't show then this is all yours.

Why did this thread suddenly become about me?
TB - your real name isn't 'Clark Griswold' by any chance is it?
In an attempt to come up with a kick ass reply to that, I, Clark Griswold, admit that I, Clark Griswold, have failed miserably.

:D

Even if I didn't already know, I would be able to tell that you are married and are adept at playing the in-law shuffle.

Now turkey frying is not common (to say the least) in the UK, we tend to roast ours (for Christmas), but I have to say these things do look like they can be stunning dangerous if you don't take sensible precautions.

Still fried turkey sounds damn tasty.

It isn't a Bluth Cornballer, but it is dangerous if you don't watch what you are doing. Honestly though, what cooking process involving boiling oil isn't dangerous if you don't pay attention?

This was set on fire on purpose for demonstration purposes. This was an electric turkey frier. It isn't truly exciting until you use a propane frier. I'll let you imagine for yourself what happens when something connected to a propane tank bursts into flames like this.

Still fried turkey sounds damn tasty.
That's because it is.

We are going over to my grandmothers-sisters-kids :p

My mom is fixing the sweet potato casserole, green beans and biscuits.(Stuff my mammaw and her sister used to fix, but my mammaw's sister has melanoma and can't do it)

Plus, I think my cousin has a Xbox 360 that he's going to bring. :D

From,
Chris.

I've had fried turkey before, and it's freaking delicious. Even better than oven turkey.

I'll see if I can get some pictures, but the Seagrams and egg nog will be telling me to sit down. ;)

we have been frying for several years and here is the break down from what we have learned...
-grass is best location as long as its alive, but oil will kill it so do it in your neighbors yard, we are fortunate to have a concrete patio and a pressure washer so thats our plan.
-just like in the chair in grade school, three legs not four for the stand, propane is actually safer if you have a good tank and inspect all the fittings
-dont waste oil... use water to determine just the right amount of oil (peanut will be the best) to use once the turkey is in your fryer (fill it up with water, put the turkey in, make sure to account for displacement) use a fryer where the diameter is just enough for the turkey, not much more as you will have to use more oil
-those fires were started when a turkey with too much ice or moisture was dumped in, make sure it is completely thawed and reasonably dry before lowering it in SLOWLY, coat hanger is good to hook onto your turkey rig to lower it with.
-big cold turkey+hot oil= not so hot oil so crank it up once the bird is in then turn it back down once the oil is back up to temp. NEVER LEAVE THE AREA AND DONT LET THE RUNTS OR PETS ANYWHERE NEAR IT
-dispose of your oil safely, it can sit for a long time with the lid on outside and not be a problem so no need to go right away.

EDIT: btw we always do one turkey in the oven as well since you cant get as creative with the fried turkey, my whole family will be at my parents house and it will most definately be destroyed, i plan to start eating when i get home tonight and not stop cep for sleep until some time this weekend :-D

Lets see, the before schedule...

1) Drive 35 mins to my "redneck" family's house, enjoy fried turkey and fixins.
2) Drive 45 mins back to the north end of town to my Mom's family Thanksgiving, eat the "classic" meal with the whole family
3) Go home, sleep, pray that "Black Friday" doesn't suck
4) Go to work on "Black Friday," sell an S-load of clothes...

I'll get pictures if possible, no guarantees...

Happy Thanksgiving day everybody!

It is now 12:00am here in NYC and now I'm going to bed cause I gotta wake up early tomorrow. ;)

Ciao!

Wife and kids are going to grandma and grandpa. I'm having the fine meal above while home alone (cause I'm sick of turkey and I don't feel like cooking). At least now I can finally catch up on all those movies I have stored on my HR20. 👍

Aww, I'm glad to see you decided to invite some of your friends from GTPlanet over for Thankgiving dinner... :) , :sly: and :D (or is it :dopey: )

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone - even the thought of it is making me hungry/jealous (even the Big Mac meal!)

Man, now I feel like a giant bucket of burger king fries.

Heh, now I don’t feel so bad anymore. :D I’m staying alone in my dorm, because home is just far enough to be an absolute pain in the neck to drive to, but not far enough to take a plane. So I’m probably going to end up eating fast food for Thanksgiving and catch up on some studying.

You're more lucky than me. My family will return around 6:00PM so we can go to grandma's for dessert. That last dessert I had that grandma (ma) made was a Jello and Cool Whip dessert that had... cloves in it... :yuck: :nervous:

Sorry, that just popped into mind.

OK, tis T-day morning. I'm prepping the bird food first (9 bowls of food for 13 parrots. Then begins the bacon frying for greasing the bird, and for breakfast. Eggs and toast for breakfast. Then the turkey cooking starts.

What's the traditional accompaniments to go with the turkey at Thanksgiving?

Do you traditionally have turkey at Xmas too? - if so, do you generally have the same meal twice?
