I've just been doing the All-Japan GT Championship in Pro mode, with my newly aquired Mazda 787B. I changed the oil before I started the championship, yet on race 3 out of 10 the oil light came on! :mad: How can it come on so quickly? This just set me wondering, does the light come on as quickly with other cars, or is it just the Mazda?

From what I gather (there's been treads here on this before...) The light comes on after 300 miles - regardless of how you drive the car. It apparently doesn't matter which car, whether you drive the entire race at redline, etc... etc...
 
Slight correction there Ethanol. 300km is when the Light comes on. AKA 189miles.

thats how ive heard it...189 miles is the magic number.
 
But only 30% into the series? What else do you do, just burn up the engine? That's stupid...

i've got many an engine that was damaged due to such a short oil lifespan. I does irk me a bit that PD set it up that way.

Thinking a bit, though, you'd have to code in engine revs, accel, decel, shift points, resistance and a slew of other factors to approximate when the light "should" come on.

Maybe for GT4 the Oil light can last until 300 miles (477 km).

It's actually not that unrealistic for the Enduros. Cars really take a beating under sustained racing like that (which is I guess the point).

But in a series of 10 races, you'd perform TONS of normal maintenance between events, even if you were not allowed to modify or change your car setup.

Oh well, I guess that's why it's PS2 and not IRL...
 
Realistically shouldnt the oil change depending on the type of car? maybe that would be a good idea. Like if you get a second hand car the oil needs replacing more regularly than a new one would, oh and a oil change during the series race would help also. Mind you this should be in the other forum.
 
I think PD should have made the oil light come on a little over 500 miles, because 189 miles isnt a whole lot. Another thing PD should have programmed in was the ability to change oil after every race in a series but i guess it makes it more challenging(really only in a few series however.) without this. Still 189 miles is NOT what a real car(one driven everyday, not a race car) needs its oil changed at.... its like every 3,000 miles or so. my 2 cents.

actually, your engine will net a gain in horsepower in the long run. as u put miles on an engine, the horsepower increases. at around 800km it reaches a max of about 5-8% more horsepower than stock. once u put over 900km on it, the net increase is around 1-3%. even with the damage done due to running dirty oil, u still come out ahead.
 
I have noticed that gain, and am quite happy about the extra HP. It does make sense that you gain HP during Break-in, and then lose some with age. (hey, that's me in reali life...)

It just rubs me the wrong way that it's only 300km to the oil light.

Many race series run well beyond the 300km limit. A few even surpass the 900km limit.

Actually, the loss [in horsepower] is only for the races... if you notice, once you exit the race and get an oil change, [your horsepower] will skyrocket back to normal. ;)

actually, i believe there is a permanent loss in HP from running with the oil light on. u only lose a little bit of permanent HP, but that doesnt matter because u net a gain from breaking in the engine.

Thats exactly what I think. Either make it so the light won't come on until your almost at the end of the series, or allow you to change the oil between races (after all, if they are trying to make it realistic, real cars in a racing championship are able to change the oil between races). And 189 miles is a bit short even for a racing car. Consider the NASCAR's that run for 500 miles in a race, even Formula One cars do 190 miles in a race. And I'm sure none of them ever see an oil light coming on!
