Last week VW gave the green light to the 227bhp Golf GTi Edition 30. This week, we bring you the 400bhp Golf R GTi.

An evolution of the R Concept cars that VW unveiled at last year’s SEMA modified car show in Las Vegas (a Passat and a Jetta), this GTi is described as being “more streetable” than those cars. That means it is more likely to make it to the road.

Developed by VW’s Design Center California, the R GTi has a weight-saving carbonfibre front. Tuner APR modified the GTi’s 2.0-litre engine with a bigger turbo, better intakes and a more efficient exhaust. Power is up to 375bhp, with 400bhp available on 100-octane fuel.

Also at this year's SEMA show was the all-white Thunder Bunny. It's a daft name, but the Golf is called the Rabbit in the States. This one is the work of tuning firm Neuspeed, and runs a 2.5-litre in-line five with a bespoke turbo installation. It produces 225bhp.

Behind the 19in gold wheels are upgraded brakes with white calipers Bunny logos, and it has an adjustable suspension system.

Neither car is likely to make it to the UK.

insurance companies are licking their lips....

That's ridiculous. 400hp at the front wheels is just death waiting to happen.

Death to you or your wallet with the tyre bills, which ever comes first.

This is insane!! You can never use the power of such a car without putting yourself and other people in danger, unless you go to the ring in Germany. It's even more insane if you consider all the speed camera's and traffic rules. Not to mention the traffic jams. Hehe, have a Golf with 400 bhp and your in a traffic jam

I'm hypocritical because I would love to have a car with that much power. ;)

What an ugly car...Lots of power and no wheels to use 'em....Oh well, at least they build something fast unlike Toyota. THis is just what Toyota needs to do to a Corolla as well.

well, if it would have 4Motion, that power would be reasonable, but FWD? damn you aussies and your big power FF mitsus.. look what you've done to poor bunny.. you have bad influence on everyone!

and when is VW coming out with the DE-TUNED 4-Motion version for FIA WRC Competition?

:)

I dont understand why you need all that power to the front wheels. Im perfectly content with my 172hp 12v VR6.

I don't know why, but I can't imagine 400hp on a golf being effective on track. The narrow stance and short-ish wheelbase don't sound like a good combo.

longer wheelbase would make it even worse, a lá Opel OPC Astra/Vectra ( Vauxhall VXR's to uncivilized barbarians ;) )

I highly doubt any piece of this car becoming a part of the production model outside of the wheels, and thats about it. The R32 will continue to be the top-spec Rabbit/Golf here in the US once it shows up late Spring 2007, and with the S3 on the horizon as well, VAG wouldn't let a little GTI go too crazy.

...That said, I'm certain that you yourself will be able to build this car with help from companies like HPA and Neuspeed.

---

Speaking of Neuspeed, they have their own "budget" Rabbit as well, dubbed the "Thunder Bunny" like the original pre-GTI model.

With 225 BHP on tap with the modified 2.5L I5, it should make for an interesting alternative down the road to the GTI, assuming of course you use a bare-bones Rabbit to begin with.

400 hp? FWD? I can dig it.

The Ring? You can't even use the power there... not without a clever electronic diff to send all the power to the outside wheel to aid turn-in... heck no... the only place you'll be able to use 400hp on a FWD like that is on an airstrip or a high-speed testing ring.

Would be nice to have the power, anyway... :D :D :D

Wow, I guess NFS:Carbon is making real-world cars now. :yuck: It looks exactly like something from NFS:C, with the bumper that could have been user-made with that real-time mod tool, and 400HP to the front wheels is something only a recent NFS fan could think up. I like VW and I like the Golf v5, but this thing is junk through & through. 👎

Are you sure "Thunder Bunny" isn't something out of the San Fernando valley? :sly:

I guess it could be called a "Bratwurst Rocket," Germany's competitor to those goons in Integras and Civics with crazy body kits. I hope this would have the 4WD, otherwise this is kinda redundant. I'm just not feeling this one...

True, the body kit is not one I would laugh at like I do the ones that are all scraped up or force the driver to go over speed bumps sideways.

The grille opening is just too large, thats my biggest problem. I think the GTI and the R32 both look great stock, and even then, the VW-sponsored aftermarket kits they sell through "Driver Gear" look good enough to begin with.

...I'm not sure if VW's 4MOTION could take that much power, given that it is one of those variable torque-displacement thingymabobs. Audi's higher-priced Quattro system might work out better though...

Bah... 4MOTION... isn't anyone else excited by riding herd on four hundred poines tied to the front bumper? The kicking, screaming, torque-steering, tire-melting madness?

Errh... is it just me?

Stock 4MOTION, probably not, but HPA has had lots of luck with 550HP and some drivetrain modifications:

It's said to be quite reliable, too. And it should be; something that heavy has to have something beefy driving the wheels.

I don't think this was designed to be streeted, at least not with full passenger payload. The rear seats are Carbon fiber seat three pads. They also have four point belts back there. I'm not down for peing a street passenger in back in that.

I dont think that it will be produced either. Besides, I dont think VW would comprimise the .:R cars by making a GTI with 4Motion because it would basically be the same car...
