(skip to the bottom to find out why the blackout happened.)
So yesterday I decided to skip out of working a full day to do some Clamming in a bay south of my house off Long Island (New York State)
Great day, came back with close to a bushel and was ready to do some BBQ'ing. When I get back to shore I had a nice conversation with my friends parents (who didn't mention anything was amiss.) And I hopped in my car ready to trek back home (which usually takes 40-45 minutes because of traffic/ traffic lights.)
Then I hear on the radio that New York City has no power (And thought "sucks to be them" and went on smiling down the road.
I get to my first traffic light which is out, when they are just getting to the part where the whole northeast was basically without electric. Needless to say a 45 minute drive with no lights to stop me (and absolutely no cops in the area because they were all directing traffic in more urban areas.) took 15 minutes.
So i get to my parents who decided to BBQ everything in their refridgerator because it was unclear as to when power would return. I tossed the clams in some fresh water to get them to spit out the sand and tossed them on the BBQ as well. Add my Girlfriend (who took 5 hours to get home thanks to insane traffic from her job) and a few neighbors and it was a bonifed party. Then at about 8pm the power came back on (we celebrated this more than anything.)
Sorry to anyone in my area and the city that has no juice, but I loved it.
Noc has a thread on this topic too.
Basically Niagra mohawk supplies excess power (hydroelectric) to the northeast because of an abundance thanks to Niagra Falls. A fire broke out in a main facility (originally misreported as a lighting strike) causing them to shut down. Without the excess power all other power stations shut down or run the risk of overloading and exacerbating the problem. Then when the problem is fixed they bring the grids up one at a time beginning with power producing areas (which actually require power to generate power) and then hospitals etc etc. Everyone in my area should be good to go some time today.
