So long story short, one of my long time friends/detailing clients/racing instructor called me yesterday about buying a ZR1 Vette. He said he had found the right one and was going to make a move on it. I of course approved of this action. That's when he dropped the bombshell.

"I want to fly you to Colorado to pick it up"

Needless to say I was speechless. I spent all of last night wondering if he was really going to do this. Until 45 minutes ago when he called me and said, "Pack your bags". So this Wednesday I will be flying to Denver and then driven up to Frederick, CO to pick up his new ZR1 and drive it back home. 1,200 miles give or take. I'm still in shock, and so I'm turning to my GTP brothers for help. Where should I stop along the way? What are the must see places? Is anyone willing to let me couch surf? :)

Basically, I need your guys advice on places to stay overnight and things to see along the way, along with tips for making a 1,200 mile drive in a 638 horsepower super-Vette. I appreciate any help guys!

You are a lucky man cherish those 1,200 miles, tell your grandchildren about it, use it on your resume.

Tip 1: See how fast you can go on the open road (Stay responsible dont get too out of hand, it isnt your car.)
Tip 2: Go to the Cherry Cricket they have AMAZING burgers and the place has been on Man vs. Food.

Thats all I got so have fun.

I'm taking the 80 out of Provo/Salt Lake City so thatll have a nice long stretch to test her out. Oh yea and Im delivering the car on friday to Thunderhill Raceway, so a track session is in order.

Don't be too rough on the car, as I'm assuming it's brand new.

^ This...

Be aware the tires cost about $3,000 a set for the ZR1 so go easy on them. I have to imagine the clutch on the car is quite pricey too.

Just cruise and enjoy the sights. A road trip in any car is fun, but a road trip in a car that awesome is even better. Where is the end destination? How much time do you have to get it there? I can probably recommend some sights along the way.

End destination is Thunderhill Raceway in Nor Cal. And the buyer is a racer, the tires will be shot in a month anyways haha. I will treat the car as if it were my own!

Thunder Hill is a wonderful track for 600bhp+ racers. You're going to love this experience. There's a perfect chicane for kicking the tail out.

Great. Now I'm going to bed hungry and jealous. :grumpy:

I would just advise you to go easy on the power and try not to get carried away, with that amount of the thing things can go very wrong, even for a good driver. Also, it will be common to be challenged by people along the way, some scumbags sense the urge to race faster cars, even though you're not actually racing them. Ignore them, road racing is not safe on a Honda Civic, I won't even start talking about how much 600bhp can inflate that danger zone.

Other than that.... well there is no other. I'm just jealous. :p

Pics or it didn't happen. :D

Which way you leaving Colorado? I-70 is your best bet, extremely easy on the eyes and nice and smooth until you hit Utah. 👍

First off, congratulations on what is basically a once in a lifetime opportunity.👍
The only advise I can give you is to go easy with the power and to clear off any debts on your credit card. I can't imagine what the fuel consumption on a ZR1 is.

EDIT: Oh yeah, use the car for your advantage.;)

Thats the best part. He's covering airfare, food, gas, and lodging. And I am taking the 70 to Provo. Then the 80 to Reno. If anyone wants to meet up along the way for a ride let me know.

Just my opinion, but I don't think this is the best thing to do with someone's new car. Lot of things to go wrong & end a friendship.

Why would you want to stop? :D

Pikes Peak in CO Springs (take the dirt sections real slow, there were some nice potholes last time I went) and Mt. Evans closer to Denver. Spectacular friggin' roads and breathtaking scenery. If by chance you get further north, near Fort Collins and Loveland, Poudre Canyon is another great road and Estes Park is a beautiful tourist town surrounded by mountains. Blackhawk is our own little Vegas too, haha!

To the OP, take it from someone who's done literally over a hundred dealer trades resist the urge to drive the hell out of it. For starters you could wreck it and your insurance premium will skyrocket. Secondly, it's probably expensive to replace the wearable parts and in 1,200 miles you can wear out brakes, clutch and tires if you drive the snot out of it. Just cruise in it and enjoy the driving experience. Oh, and take photos!! :D

Dude, it's just a Corvette. It's not like he's picking up an Enzo or Zonda. Even still, it's just a car.

Overpowered American stupid car. :P

Have fun and don't wreck it. ;)
When someone in a Civic challenges you, as tempting as it may be, don't give in.
That is a good self esteem booster ;).

If you check it, maybe. Don't try to take it as a carry-on. You might want to research that one.

There is no mention on the TSA website of not being able to take a radar detector or GPS on a plane as a carry one. sweeeeet

Its only the holy grail of Corvettes. Some people just don't understand.

Enjoy the ride!! I wouldn't go crazy with her but it would definitely be necessary to roll on the throttle every now and then. 👍

Don't know why you're going to need those while on the plane...

Yeah, having something like that go through a scanner is just begging for a strip search. I'd throw it in with a checked bag. 👍

I think the plan is to take it with him to use in the car once he picks it up instead of having to buy one when he gets there. :dunce:
