IIRC the double pivot is simply a version of audis split A arm that they introduced in the 90s.

if youre looking at the suspension assembly from the top, the lower control arm looks a bit like a capital A with the strut tower attached to the pointy end of the A. by moving the location of that strut tower inward so that its position is no longer at the point, (and with careful calculation locating the theoretical point above the centerline of the wheel,) the suspension locates the wheel more accurately throughout the entire motion of the wheel.

this obviously improves feel, and handling and yadda yadda yadda.

I hate run flats too. Is there still a spare well in the trunk, so an actual spare could be fitted after the OEM tires meet their maker?

You know, I was wondering if some eagle eyed person would spot that. I actually wrote the sentance "..but because the E21 was so good..." and suddenly realized that pretty much no one would actually say the E21 was superior to the E30 in anyway shape or form  So I just went straight to the '02. ;)

i guess i'll have to say it then. the E21 was better than the 2002. this coming from a die hard 2002 fan. look at my signature below. i own one and intend to get another 2002 in the future.

the E21s biggest problem was being the successor to an icon. it wasnt the giant leap forward that the 2002 was. it was the giant leap sideways. and that un-nerved some people who thought the 02 should be replaced with a car just as sporty and spartan. you have to remember that the 2002 was not a luxurious car by any measure, but it had brought sporting credentials to the sedan segment, and thats what was expected.
instead, a heavier, less powerful (thank smog regulations that were kicking in) more luxurious car was introduced and thats what turned away the sheep and lemmings. you cannot argue that ergonomically, safety, luxury and comfort and more were not exponentially increased versus the 02. the advent of smog regulations killed the performance of the M10 engine especially in a heavier package. thats where people think the E21 fell. it was a dog in comparison to the sprightly nimble and light on its feet 2002.

but it was miles better as a daily driver. with AC that actually cooled you down, an interior that didnt admit all the noises and rattles a 2002 does and more ergonomic consideration in the location of the controls.

it certainly led to the marvelous E30 that we all know and love.

/me boggles  Not that I find anything to disagree with in your post. It's just rare to find someone willing to say a single bad thing about the legendary '02. Let alone one of it's owners. Et tu, Brute?

But can you think of many people --any people-- that would say the E21 is superior to the E30? Not just in some respects, but overall?

Good news, guys. My dad's friend is interested in a 335i as well, so we might soon have one (or have leased one) if we can get a bargain for going in on 2 cars in one sale. Dig?

got my head firmly planted on my neck, not up the 02s arse. even though i just about idolize it, thank you very much.
there are plenty of shortcomings with the 02. as an owner i can give you a litany of them; from barely adequate brakes, not quite adequate cooling, weak struts, poor ventilation, yadda yadda yadda. but taken in context, (as the neue klasse debuted in the early 60s) and for a small car, it was ok. in fact, considering it debuted in the mid sixties, it was great. not many small cars of that era had good anything.

now mind you, im not saying the E21 was scads better. im just saying in areas where the 02 was weak it was better. and that makes for a better overall car, hence the better daily driver quip. but as a fun proposition the E21s lose to the 2002 except for the euro only (rest of the world actually!!!) 323is becasue they were heavier and had less power but had essentially the same drivetrain.

as for the second question.
i think as time and technology advance, the cars get better. in fact, id say i know that for a fact. some of us stick to certain eras, and prefer the metal/ technology/ feel of a certain era of cars. i personally like early late eighties/ nineties stuff which includes fabolous cars like E30 M3s, 190E 2.5-16 EVOs, AMG hammer, ford sierra cosworth, lotus carlton, porsche 959, buick century GNX, chevy/GMC syclone twins and so on. if its not that era its the late sixties early seventies stuff. 2002s, ford escort MK 1, alfa GTVs, datsun 510s, lotus cortinas, first gen mustangs and camaros and challengers, 68 eldo coupes, nortons, BSAs, triumphs, citroen DS/ maserati clone and so on. but i digress.

the new cars always improve. just about the only ones i can think off that clearly did not improve have been the mitsubishi eclipses after the second gen ones. but the relentless march of technology keeps making the cars safer, faster, more economical, better handling, but albeit bigger. and heavier. compare the chassis stiffness of any two generations of cars and the new one always has 40% better bending stiffness and so on. this translates to better handling, and safer impacts and host of other things. but i dont need to tell you this.

the inexorable forward march of technology usually results in better goods. its only when companies get cheap and refuse to invest in the product that it fails. witness the body on frame SUVs being swamped by the new wave of car based SUVs. mitsubishis combining the eclipse frame with the newer much bigger galant. fords refusal to update the ranger (its was once in the top five best selling trucks annually.) and so on.

the E21 just happens to be eclipsed in some arenas by its predecessor, and in all arenas by its sucessor. but i think that if you follow the genesis of the 3 series, you have to give credit to the E21 for introducing luxury amenities to it. think of it this way; the E30 was the perfect culmination of the light responsive handling of the 2002 and the comfort and luxury (as it were) of the E21. i think without the E21 the E30 is not such a great little car.

but frmo my experience working for benz they tend to invest heavily in one generation, evolve it for the next one, then take the combination and culmination of the two to revolutionise the next generation. this is why the third generation seems to be so much better in certain cases. 2002, E30, E46. all great small BMWs. the ones in between, E21, E36 were good. but really didnt bring the game on a whole lot. IMO
nuff ranting

i too forget about the E21s sometimes.
personally E30s are my favorite BMW, probably because i owned one for a few months (gave it to my brother, i got bored with it).

2002s sure do look like a crap-load of fun though.

Unfortunately, no. There is a storage 'pit' compartment underneath the floor panel in the trunk. It's not large enough and the wrong shape to hold even a donut spare. It looks like BMW might have also put the battery down there, as the irregular shape of the storage 'pit' intrusion looks roughly the size of one. But I didn't follow up to confirm that.

It seems the way to go is to buy a BMW M Mobility Kit II (aka- can of fix a flat goo).

If demand for it is high in america, I doubt you would get a discount. Thats how things work over here in england anyway.

Things can always be negotiated. ;)

Well, we passed on the 335. It was too expensive considering our other option. We got a brand new, (albeit slightly used) fully-loaded AMG C55 with under 7k miles for under 40 grand. The car is totally immaculate; the guy originally bought it is some high-ranking Air Force dude who then traded it in as soon as he could afford an E63. You know how those guys are... "shine your shoes, soldier!"

...it's menacing. :trouble:

^ get some pictures up and post about your new car!
congrats on the purchase!
