Porsche was upset about the M3 GTR, saying it was too powerful and too good top race in the GT series, and they have gotten their wish. tthe Le MAns orgainization that make the rules has rewritten them, forcing the M3 to drop out of the 2002 schedule. Re-making the car to go in the rulebooks would mean new intake restriction, amoung other things, with would set the M# down enough to not be a serious conternder, therefore the M3 will not race this year in Le Mans series. Maybe, in 2003, BMW will have a brand-new M3 GTR, to be able to compete, but that is unknown.

One of the GTR's may be running in the Belcar series... so the rumour says.

It is a shame that the car won't be running, but it clearly didn't meet the spirit of the rules, and now the letter either.

PTG may get the car running for later this year, but with the old I6 engine in it.

shame... one of the nicest looking Race cars of these past years...
But i'm sure BMW will come out with something different one day or another...

Too bad, but I think this was known last year.

Nope, last year all that was going on was Porsche's whineing(sp), but now the Offical rules have been changed. The odd thing? I don't think the new rules affect Porsche...:thatsodd::reallyodd:

Of course it doesn't affect the Porsches..they've actually built the required number and sold them.

How many have BMW built for sale? 0, zero, nadda, its a prototype at this point in time, and as such had penalties. IF they built the minimum numbers there would be NO penalties and the thing could race... still no cars built, not one, looks like they don't plan on it either. This is a GT class.

well the 4.0l V8 was used in production... though not in the M3, but it was a production engine... hopefully BMW will work on the 6 cyl. engine to kill those Porsches again...

Yes, Saleen does come to mind.. having said that though, there are two classes of cars, and two classifications of manufacturers. The GTS class has a lower number of production requirements.

Additionally there are large manufacturers and boutique manufacturers of which Saleen is. There are even lower requirements of them. I'm not sure that Saleen is facing any penalties, but the have built and sold a number of cars.

BMW - Having an engine of the same size does not work in this instance. This is not the same block, not the same materials, not in the same position, the chassis is not available for sale....

Yep, Fogelhund was right that particular 4.0l V8 was no production motor. It was purposely built for the M3 GTR. Now had they (BMW) used one of their production V8s from maybe one of 5 series cars there might not have been such a fuss. In fact I think this is what one of the Grand Am teams did (Jet Motorsports I think?).

Sadly thought I doubt that BMW has any intensions of making the M3 GTR conform to the rules. Their main focus is F1 and the European Touring Car Championship and with Gerhard Berger being one of the top guys in BMW Motorsport it means that GT racing won't be high on their list of priorities.

i think it was fair dat da bimmer had a v8, only cause porsches have 2win turbo's
= ='s =

bmw has the most powerful engine in f1
factory built by "M" V10

The porsches in GT are normally aspirated.

To follow up what I said a while ago.. the Saleen is facing penalties until they have built 12 road cars.

The M3's with the I-6 weren't making enough torque to keep up with the Porsches. The V8 is able to make enough torque even with the plates on the air intake.
