I saw this in a thread this morning, the danger of lambo doors, this lamborghini flipped over onto its roof, making it impossible to open the doors once the vehicle caught on fire, I put the pictures down lower in the thread so that people who do not want to see the pictures do not have to, so BE WARNED: SOME GRAPHIC PICTURES. I never really thought of this senario before, but its a scary thought!!! Although unless you have a lamborghini you wont have to wrry about it as most aftermarket conversion kits allow the door to swing both up and out like a stock door

I have seen these before, sad.

But yes please do yourself a favor and remove the two NSFW links you have added, even though you're just linking them they are strictly not allowed on this forum, and moderators will not be too pleased at all. If anyone is so curious that they want to see them they can PM you for the link (They are not pretty :().

Very interesting. I've been in just one serious accident my whole life and guess what, vehicle ended up on its' roof. I also never thought or heard about this possibility before, and Lamborghini's been using scissors style door since (late?)70's? Very surprising!

Wow, that's certainly a bad crash. People make fuss over how well an airbag works, but, as far as I know, they don't complain about scissor doors being even more dangerous.

And argh, remove them last two links, please... They'll only be asked to be removed by a Moderator anyway.

I dont think they are quite as dangerous as people are making them out to be. I understand the complications of scissor doors not opening upside down but hear me out. My brother has a Vauxhall Astra and he was recently crashed into by a hit and run driver, there was not much damage to the car at all apart from the light and indicator being smashed. The car is still totally drivable and other than the said smashed lights the car looks in perfect condition. What he found out the next day when i tried to get in the car though was that the wing (fender) had been pushed back just enough to stop the passenger side door from opening. This was from a 15mph head on collision.

I dont know the exact facts but i doubt any car which lands on ifs roof because of an accident, scissor doors or not, would be able to open the doors. This is probably the reason that scissor doors are allowed on cars and not illegal. For a car to land on its roof would require quite alot of force especially without the aid of a ramp or similar and this force needed to get the car on its roof ,to me at least, suggests that that is more than enough force to render the doors uselss.

Spec....

Which is why on modern cars (how old was/is the Astra in question) any car that allows the door apertures to deform and hinder opening will get heavily marked down in euro-ncap test scores, insurance ratings (in the UK) will be increased and if poor enough may not get type-approval for sale.

The problem is that doors of this nature may still be openable after a crash, if the car is the right way up, and every accident situation can't be tested or legislated for.

However this concern is not new by any stretch of the imagination, its been raised many times before. Its also why a number of people carry small 'glass-hammers' of the type you see fitted in buses and coaches in their cars.

Even in a car with conventional doors you can come across problems, having put a car in a ditch before I can tell you opening a normal door when the car is on its side is not easy. I was lucky enough that no fire risk was present, but it still took a while to open the door, particularly when disorientated.

Scaff

Edited to add - thanks for removing the last two links (that I did not see myself) as they would have been removed anyway.
