The argument that the HD-DVD name is easier to understand is ok but to most, Blu Ray sounds alot cooler and alot more high-tech than DVD with HD infront of it. I prefer the name Blu Ray over HD-DVD.

I think there is some truth in the marketing of Blu-Ray, they managed to get their name out there a bit more with clever advertising. The thing is though, to someone like your Grandmother or maybe your Uncle, who likely don't know anything about the two formats, the HD-DVD name would presumably carry more weight than the Blu-Ray name.

Its a bit odd, I know, but it seemed to work out differently.

I agree that to people who are less, I'll say 'technologically informed' the product they have been buying for about the last 7-8 years, DVD, it would seem like the next logical step to add HD infront because it is HD video and audio on something that looks just like a DVD.

But I do think that Sony and the others deciding to come up with a clever name for the next format, Blu Ray, just sounded more high-tech, I'm sure many people said, "Blu Rays must be good, probably some cool Lasers and stuff going on in there."

I'm thinking the same as well. They did a much better job presenting it to the people, making them aware of the products, and furthermore, associating it with the Bravia TV line... Which is like THE television to get if you want HDTV, generally.

It will be interesting to see how the later stuff works out. I don't think Blu-Ray will do a "We Won The War" campaign or anything, but I'm pretty sure they'll figure out some way to promote themselves with it.

Thats interesting, they will probably come up with some sort of promotion in the next few weeks just so everyone knows that they did win. Maybe somethings like HDTV's will come with a BR player or something like that, a few BR movies.

But ya they definately wont be coming out with anything like "We won the war"

I can't say Blu Ray that well but it doesn't sound as stupid or generic as HD DVD... I mean come on, HD is getting so over used.

I know plenty of people who liked the format because Blu Ray sounded cooler, its sounds more techy, futuristic and mysterious... also the electric blue box packaging stood out more for them...

Some people think this is crazy but branding and colour schemes do have an impact, however slight, on peoples choices!

HD-DVD although being easier to understand had some thinking DVD is in the title so it sounds old.. and whats the difference between this DVD and that DVD... thus people being put off... theres is not a clear bold enough difference!

Kaz Hirai's reaction vid..... priceless!

I would say the fact I have a Blu Ray player in my ps3 is a better reason than my previous one but regardless I'm glad M$ shady practices didn't pay off.
