From LLN:

It has been reported that Volkswagen and Apple are currently discussing the idea of producing a car together. Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn met earlier this month in California to discuss the possible joint-venture. No details about the car have been released, but it has already been dubbed the "i-Car."

According to Germany's Capital magazine, research has shown that a compact car upgraded with Apple products would be of great interest to young target groups.

VW and Apple have worked together before. In 2003, the two companies joined forces in the "Pods Unite" promotion, in which VW gave a complimentary Apple iPod to anyone who purchased a Beetle.

You know, if you turn it sideways video starts streaming on the windshield.

And, on top of that, I guess I should bring up this thread:
Here

thats an appropriate thread title

I'm going into my nuclear bunker for this one

👍

MP3 player in the dash, TV on the windshield. Bluetooth phone on the mirror. Computer in the steering wheel.

The best part?

It even works as a semi-decent, partially functional automobile! VROOOOOM!!!!

Until the door handles fall off :dopey:

But truly, the world is ending... except for YSSMAN. But I dunno, Apple might find out VW's aren't the most reliable product ever, and that would go against the Apple image :dopey:

The two belong together...

What kind of cars do you think most Apple users drive? I'd guess and say Volkswagen and Subaru top that list.

My assumption for the two "working together" would probably be on something small, probably a Polo or a Golf, and somehow packaging a MacMini into the car, making iPod connectivity something awesome, and I assume there would be something with AppleTV as well (possibly on larger vehicles). Really, I can only see it as a good thing, despite my general distaste for Apple's computers (I can't stand OSX, but its the same for Vista too).

We can't be mad they didn't go with Toyota. Most of their drivers who look at an "Apple Edition" model would probably think it comes with a bushel in the trunk...

Well, it's a good thing Mitsu's already got that name covered.

They were talking about this on CNN this afternoon, as it apparently has caused a bit of a buzz down on Wall Street. Their explanation for what was going to happen was much like what Ford has done with the Sync system, which was co-developed by Microsoft.

Getting an OSX-based system in the cars will be cool, particularly if it will amplify the utility of the iPod in various vehicles and such, but everything is still up in the air. With Apple still being the "hip" computer company, I assume that Volkswagen wants to do much the same with their newer vehicles.

...Not that they have to try all that hard against Toyota and Honda anymore...

So how long will it take for someone to hack it and allow the VW to be a car?

I'm still not understanding how you would make a car with OSX. Would the nav system use it? How does this work?

So does this mean the car will have parts stolen from Mercedes built into it and will only have a single pedal for its first 15 years of production?

Or hack it so you can fill it with gas from someplace other than an i-station? :D

In all seriousness; why even have an OSX based system in a car - heck, why have a computer in a car at all unless it is able to drive the car while you conduct your business. Honestly, I dont understand why people cant just wait until they are done driving before they decide to email, text, call someone, balance their check book, apply make-up, remove fingernail polish, read a book and even eat!

It is a little much I would say; much more than what should be done while driving.

Pah.

Can I get one without electronic goodies? oh, wait, It's Apple.

Get me a plain old GTi, with nothing other than the max go-fast equipment, and leave me alone. No, wait, an S2000 CR. or an exige. or something else with minimum interior and maximum go.

A few years ago a dude put a MacMini inside of his GTI. Basically he used the DVD touch screen for the monitor, the MacMini sitting between the two front seats for ease of access.

My guess is that it would be like a portable PC inside the car that allows for greater connectivity to a wide variety of products, most of them being Apple of course. I'd expect touch screen abilities to operate most programs, however, the programs made available presumably quite minimal. I'd assume something like iPhoto to display and organize pictures, some kind of connectivity with AppleTV for movies and video, a streamlined version of iTunes for easy use while behind the wheel, and probably some kind of integration between Safari and the SatNav (much like what Mercedes is doing with Google Maps and Yahoo Maps).

Computers, software, TVs, music, phones, other gadgets.

Now cars??? When will they stop? Are they trying to take over the world or something?

Too bad only 10% of the roads are compatible, and out of that 9% crash it randomly. However, crash recovery is simple, press the Apple logo in the Airbag and it resets :p

The last thing we need is Apple and Vee-Dubb getting together. People in Vee Dubbs don't seem to grasp the "Text later, drive now" concept about...driving! Now they're playing Counterstrike while driving down the freeway?!
