Coloradans still kicking arse ;)

I wasn't surprised to see Colorado with the lowest rate, although I thought the lowest would be Oregon or Hawaii.

Obesity rates did not decline in any state and even Colorado does not win high marks -- its score means one in five state residents is at higher risk for conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

"Today, the state with the lowest adult obesity rate would have had the highest rate in 1995," said Levi.

Four years ago, only one U.S. state had an adult obesity rate above 30 percent, according to the report. Obesity is defined as a body mass index -- the weight-to-height ratio -- of 30 or more.

Watched "Food Inc" recently and this fact was mentioned in it. Also, 3 of the fattest cities in the US are in Texas alone, the only state to have 3 fat cities from the top 10 fattest.

Everything is bigger in Texas.

For life! 👍

I weigh 130lbs by the way.

Woah. How old and how tall are you? I'm not trying to rain on Colarado's parade here, the facts are facts. But, I'm 17 and just under 6 feet tall and weigh 150.

For the record though, I'm not at all surprised Texas is ranked where it is as further detailed out by Hollow^.

After being down here for as long as I have I'd might suggest it is more like everything is "inflated" in Texas ;)

Well Colorado is one of the most outdoors-driven states in the US. Boulder, CO and Portland, OR are always ranked 1 and 2 (often switching) for being the most cyclist-friendly towns in the US. The limitless skiing, hiking, snowboarding, and so on must also be nice contributors. 👍

I'm 27 but pretty small in stature. 5 foot 6 to be exact.

Exactly. SO much outdoor activities to do, it's hard not to get out and hike or ski. From my home town I was 5-10 minutes from great hiking, 30 minutes from a ski resort, 45 minutes from river rafting, and plenty of camping/fishing all around. If you like the outdoors, Colorado is the place to be.

The South knows how to make some good food, ya hear. Most of the top states are from the South, or heavily influenced by the southern states.

America in general needs to get off the couch and hit the park/gym.

A lot of social/health/economic problems are strangely linked to a person's physical condition.

I think the reason the U.S. has such a high obesity rate is because we over emphasize white collar(desk) jobs and a lot of people view blue collar(physical) work as a negative thing because of it.

I really have no proof to prove this, but it's a theory I think holds some weight.

Body mass index seems like a pretty poor measurement for obesity. Though I guess it's more likely that people will have extra fat than muscle.

My theory is that the recession has led more people to cheap, unhealthy food. This would explain why DC with greedy government crooks has one of the lowest obesity rates.

Holds zero weight over here in Australia. We have blue collar workers earning well over 200k per year thanks to our mining boom.....hell, even dishwashers get over 60k working in the mining camps. The big mining firms (Rio Tinto, BHP, Xstrata) are pumping billions to make sure we get as much out of the ground as possible. Compare that to a normal white collar worker (admin, sales, tech support) which normally earns between 50-80k then you get why they are all abandoning their white collar jobs and going to the mines here.

:P

The bad thing about being half-American is that I get all this crap saying that "Lol even though you're skinny-and-one-of-the-lightest-in-the-class, you're American so that makes you automatically fat."
The stupid thing is that the difference between New Zealand and America in percentage of overweight people is 5-🤬-Per-Cent!

Wow, Michigan is the fattest Yankee state. I guess it's because we are depend on the automobile for everything. I've honestly never seen a state more hostile towards anything other then a car when used as a mode of transportation. Not to mention we are all unemployed and depressed because of the economy.

I honestly was feeling really good about my workout regimen lately, but being a North Carolinian I think I had better step it into high gear :nervous:.

NY is so low, I must not be doing my part. Fraking no fast food places around here are open after 2AM! grr

Yeah technically my BMI is right on the borderline for overweight. I'm 6' 205 pounds but I'm not fat. BMI doesn't take muscle mass into consideration.

I think a lot of it is diet, climate, and culture. Places that (over-)emphasise skinny bodies and slim figures, such as most larger cities, areas known for their cosmopolitan attitudes, are likely to produce lower BMI ratings. Places that instill fitness, less sedentary behaviors, have nicer weather year-round are also going to help...would you rather take that jog in 30 degree or 70 degree weather?

Yeah, BMI is terrible. It was made over a half a century ago and the average height of people has gone up. Besides, fat=/= unhealthy and skinny=/=healthy.

The best way to judge ones health is waist to hip ratio. Not all fat is bad fat.

My BMI also says I'm well overweight yet, I was in better shape then my buddy when he just came out of basic. I'm 5'7 and hes 6'1 and we weighed the same. I guess lifting weights make me unhealthy? Funny how that works BMI.

Damn! My state didn't even get a podium:( Oh well, we still make more whiskey!
