The Futuristic Towncar

American cars arent ugly, the problem is that they do not have a defining style like they onced used to... Or atleast a style that their compeditors carry...

Sure, Cadillac has the "Art and Science" theme on their cars, and it truely has been hit or miss... But overall I would give their cars atleast a 7 or 8 in most instances, and models like the SRX and XLR get easy 10s.

The biggest problem is that GM, Ford, and DCX both wait on what the competiton is going to do before they decide what exactly they are going to do... Of course, there are stand out models like the 300C, Charger, Corvette, HHR, PT Cruiser, Wrangler, Hummers, etc... But generally they are design to stay within the boundaries of what Honda and Toyota dictate, just like the rest of the market.

Ever notice that it is usually American cars like the 300C and Mustang GT that sell incredibly well? Its because their styling pulls on strings that are destinctly American, and flip Europe and Japan the bird for designing such conservative cars... Thats why so many of the American brands have chosen to go retro with the styling, bringing back designs that were made in Detroit for people who live in America... Not some bloke who lives in London, a teacher in Berlin, or a businessman in Tokyo...

Kids want fast cars, something with 108hp and FWD and refrigerator styling ain't going to cut it. The youngest person i've seen in an xB is probably 40. The older folks just buy it for the cheap price, good mpg, and the versatility.
Hell, I want a Corolla GTS, the RWD version. It may only have 120 hp, but i'm not the average kid who lusts after a Civic sedan with an automatic.

Onikaze
I don't think average kids lust after auto civic sedans.

Me, I want to convert a Miata (first gen, NA) into a hardtop coupe.
You should see my school parking lot. Most of it is filled with Civics, new and old, riced and stock.

Most of the kids I went to school with were spoiled... Living in a pretty wealthy side of Grand Rapids, a lot of kids drove Acuras and BMWs for their first cars...

Sure, the "normal" kids drove Civics, Corollas, Jettas, Cavaliers, etc... But we all wanted something better... A lot of kids wanted the new Mustang, more sophisticated kids wanted the new Lexus IS350... I just wanted a VW R32 or Pontiac GTO...

It all depends on how you were raised and how much money you have...

...Scions are appealing to kids, sure... But when adults are going to be getting a rather economical and somewhat good looking car for $16K with a lot of extras, why not buy the kids car?

...I'm actually mildly interested in this car after all...

If they didn't it would look like a Mercury...

It might just be the black paint and cell phone, but aside from the garish grilles and oddly-patterned, excessively-tall-looking taillights, that looks pretty bland.

Actually, I think it looks pretty good. If this is the Towncar replacement--and as long as there is a good powerplant underneath the bonnet--it will be a decent car. I don't even care if it is a V8 or V6--just give it around 280~300BHP-ish and it will be A-OK.

But, having said that, I DO prefer the original concept design MUCH better.

AFAIK, there aren't any plans to place the Yamaha V8 under the hood, so I assume the 3.5L V6 and presumably the future twin-turbocharged model will likely be standard fare, presumably with AWD as the only option to put power to the ground.

Are we talking about the Falcon's I6 twin turbo unit? In that case bring it on!

No, the twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 that debuted in the MKR concept, albeit with a slightly de-tuned output, probably between 300-350 BHP. That is, again, if Ford has the transmissions and drivertrains that can cope with that kind of power in a car...

The autobox in the Mustang can handle it, however if they are going for more cogs they'll have to "borrow" Volvo's autobox from its S80 or S60R to cope with the extra power. Otherwise just give me an option for a T56 manual or something there abouts and I'll take it.

One problem;

A five-speed slushbox is going to be left in the dust by most of the competition, even by "lesser" models from other competitors. Ford does claim that their version of the 6T70E (co-developed with GM) can handle up to 300 BHP, but unless Ford really caps the power with the Turbo V6, that doesn't seem likely. They would probably have to do some shopping at ZF to get the right setup, which does seem somewhat likely, given that the Navigator has one sitting inside of it right now..

Initial Impressions-> Looks more like a Lancia than a Lincoln. :indiff:

Heh, now all they need for my next 35,000 dollars of income is a clutch and a six-speed...

I like the new guy already!!!

PS: Don't tell Doug, he might go off about how Tiptronic brings the pwnage to the stick again...
