GTPlanet, before Speed Channel in America shows off this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, I want to bring up this thread to discuss the Goodwood Festival. If you want to talk about highlights of this great event or how this year's event went, you can. For those of you who may be inexperienced with this event, you can look at this site: http://www.goodwood.co.uk/2004/fos/intro.htm

The Goodwood Festival of Speed has been around since 1936 and since then became a wonderful exhibit of motorsports history. Everything from 19th Century steam cars to motorcycles to rally cars and onwards race at the Goodwood Hillclimb. The Goodwood circuit race brings together many types of two and four wheeled competition.

Care to reply? Go ahead. If I find any more information on the circuit race (not the hillclimb), I'll talk more in detail about it in future posts.

I've been looking for good hi-res images from the '04 FOS for a while now. Does anyone have any good links? I have a lot of small pics, but biggies elude me. The FOS always looks like a fantastic event, but unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to go what with moving over to the other side of the world and all that.

Here's a useless fact about the FOS: When renowned automotive journalist Denis 'Jenks' Jenkinson passed away a few years ago, they were going to give him an incredible sending off salute, by firing up all the cars at Goodwood and revving the engines in a kind of 21 gun salute type celebration. Trouble is, the rather snobby and party-pooping locals around the track decided that this wouldn't do at all as it may disturb the peace and hurt their fragile eardrums, so it never came to be. Pity. That would certainly have been something to behold!

EDIT: John, why don't you want to find any info. on the Hillclimb? That's the best bit!

I'm watching the rerun of the first part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. One of the cars on display right now is going to be in GT4- the Peugeot... I can't describe it accurately except for that it has square lights and was a Group B race.

But yes. I knew about the hillclimb, but not the circuit race I was mentioning earlier. The coolest part of this deal is the hillclimb. I remember Rod Millen speedfreaking his Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak racing machine up that hill. It was so fun. I'm going to talk about this in the GT4 forums, but if you want to talk automobile history (especially competition autos), look no further than the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

John - the Group B Peugeot you are talking about is the 205 T16

Goodwood has to be the best 'historic' meeting in the world at the moment - the racing is real (unlike the one at Laguna) and some of the best drivers in the world compete there. Unfortunatly i've never been down to watch the racing, its the other end of the country to me, but some of the people i compete against have raced in the St Mary's Trophy for 'historic saloons' - they say the racing is very competitive, and that competing against drivers such as Sterling Moss, Jack Sears, Johnny Herbert, Tiff Needle or Gerhard Berger is an opportunity not to be missed!

Well, Speed Channel will show the other part of this year's event. I think this is probably the best convergence of past and present. I think this convergence is better defined in this event than at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Both the Laguna Seca and Goodwood events are still two great races regardless. But if you want past and present, board a plane to the good old United Kingdom and go to the Goodwood event. It's mostly too late this year, so try next year. I can only imagine what it's like there. If I was there, I'd surely like to talk with all the legends and current racers. I maybe even rub elbows with the wonderful Alain de Cadenet.

Alain de Cadenet has to be the most overated, egomaniac out there! I've went to the 'festival od speed' about 7 or 8 years ago and got very close to (i'm not one for autograph collecting) many motorsport heros such as Eddie Irvine, Emo Fittipaldi, Colin McRae. I even let Jim Hall (of Chaperall fame) push infront of me in the que for the 'porta-potties'

Lucky bastard... I mean, cool! After watching this, they have some very stylish soapbox racers for the kiddies. I liked the Bentley EXP GT one the best.

I'm pretty sure that its grown men (who should know better) who race the 'soapboxes!!!'

I went to the Festival of Speed in 1999 and 2002. I've never been to the Revival Meeting, usually because it's the same time as the beginning of the school year, but I'll probably go next year. I got Derek Bell and Emerson Fittipaldi's (sp) autographs in 99, and Ralf Schumacher, Andy Wallace and Jenson Button's in 2002.

UPDATE: Thanks to some of you, I've learned that the "circuit race" I'm talking about is called the "Goodwood Revival." So that's what I mean by "Circuit Race" in this context.

the revival meeting is great, really nice cars, a lot of gt40s plus you can see minis pwning mk2 jags :D
