If you are a politician, diplomat, contractor in Iraq, your going to want some protection. Most people opt for an armored Suburban or luxury car. But what if that isn't enough? That's where Armet Armored Vehicles Inc. comes in, with the latest over-the-top armored car.

Here's the low-down on the Gurkha:
  • It's $200K
  • It can be built at-location
  • It goes 90+ mph
  • It can take anything up to a roadside bomb
  • It weighs 9 1/2 tons
  • It's not friendly looking.
Sure, it's ridulous. But it is a militaray vehicle. And while it would make a terrible civilian vehicle (unless you absolutely need this level of protection), I think it's pretty badass in general.:D There are already 40 made, and a few US clients. I imagine some celebrities will want one, though, just to be "cool".

Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Cool? I think so. Though even if I had the money, I wouldn't bother, unless people wanted to actually kill me, or if I could put a gun on it.:trouble: It's completely impracticle for most civilian use (hell it's too heavy for most smaller streets and bridges), but for those that need good protection (like anyone working in Iraq) you can't really do better unless you drive an APC. It's market will probably be low do to cost and low overall neccesity, but it will certainly find it's niche. Demand is expected to be high overseas, though.
With linky goodness (more info here).

C'mon, How can you not think this thing is cool? :Dh

I'll build this kit car. My Dad bought a Hummer replica in the Phillipines from an uncle. I got ideas with this one if the money is right.

Theres a guy who lives near me who has a road legal APC, and actual APC. He collects old military vehicles.

There's a club in Israel of Military Vehicles Collectors. One can actually find old parts from various Shermans in old junkyards...

The ultra rich have sportscars to spend hundreds on thousands of dollars on, if not millions. What do the SUV crowd do when they win the lottery? Buy a Gurka by Armet. Cousin site Jalopnik, who we have constant toy-envy of, says it best:

The squat and hedgehog-lookin' 19,000 lb beast-of-an-armored-vehicle ain't just built to shrug off a roadside bomb with its high strength ballistic aluminum armor, or stop a bullet from an AK-47 with its ballistic glass. No, it's also pretty fast for its size -- with a top speed of 93 mph.

At 93 MPH, you're not winning any races, but it doesn't matter when you can plow through the opposition. A steal at only $200,000.– Brian Lamp

Apart from the cool factor of owning preety much a tank and the ability to make your own roads by going through houses/buildings... isn't this just a little bit impractical. Could you imagine this in a car crash, they'd be nothing left of the other car.

A cheaper option would be to not live in the middle east.

But it looks cool.

Err, it's just an armoured car. I've seen loads of them... In museums.

But my big question... What exactly does 'upto a roadside bomb mean'? It's not like roadside bombs come in a standard size or weight :irked:

I assume it would be whatever the average sized IED is (roughly of couse, as ExigeExcel said, they don't come in standard sizes) Most are probably about the same size, though.

DAYAM!

Sadaam shoulda sold these to the US millitary along with the oil, and they probably woulda looked away a little. i can imagine drug lords, mafia Kingpins, and dictators would buy these in a heartbeat...and they're not ugly!

i can see this thing all blinged out, tho, by the first ultra rich rap star that falls in love :P

And america wonders why we have $3.00 fuel, but in other places it translates into about.... 7-10 dollars! Take that all of us american whiners, we've had cheap fuel for so long we whine about 3 dollars!
