The Midfield Classic @ Midfield Raceway

historicentrylistuo7.jpg

Although the level of participation was down last race, from previous weeks, I look forward to the regular’s returning to race at this classic track.
Midfield Raceway has changed very little over the years, apart from a re-profiling of turn 3 in the switch from GT3 to GT4 which has reduced the speeds through T1.
Therefore, most racers will be able to take to the track like ducks to water.

In testing, I found it challenging, relaxing, and to be VERY fast with these cars & most drivers should be able to achieve lap times UNDER 59 seconds on medium fronts, and very much quicker with the softer compounds.

This race heralds the introduction of the weight penalty system, the adjustments have been worked out from performance through the first three rounds.
+2% weight for a race win, +1% for the second place driver, 0 for the middlings, and down to -2% for the tail-ender. (except last week where it was +1% to -1% only)

Qualifying settings:
Location : Arcade mode – Time Trial – Midfield Raceway (Forwards/Normal)
Tyres: RSS (Qualifying) compound only.
2 Wheels on track at ALL times. (Rumble strips are classed as track)
Use the P/W settings below.

Race Settings:
Location : Arcade Mode - Single Race – Midfield Raceway (Forwards/Normal)
AI @ +10 difficulty & Racing Medium tyres
MILD tyre wear - 29 laps - Penalties set to: Speed Limiter
Tyres Front : RS or RM Rear :RS, RM or RH tyres.
You must use BOTH compounds ON THE FRONT at least once in the race.(Just like in F1)
You MAY use miss-matched tyre compounds front and back.
Driving Aids: TCS is optional, ASM is not allowed
Use the P/W settings below

STD Car – Power / Weight Limits – P/W Ratio
Jag : 0% @ 914Hp / -6% @ 840Kg = 1.088 Hp/Kg
R89C : +5% @ 954Hp / +0% @ 900Kg = 1.060 Hp/Kg
R92CP : +2% @ 958Hp / +0% @ 900Kg = 1.064 Hp/Kg
88CV : +0% @ 906Hp / -1% @ 841Kg = 1.077 Hp/Kg
C9 : -2% @ 908Hp / +1% @ 901Kg = 1.008 Hp/Kg
787 : +3% @ 815Hp / +0% @ 830Kg = 0.982 Hp/Kg
905 : +15% @ 918Hp / +0% @ 750Kg = 1.224 Hp/Kg

Adjustments from Std for performance (specific to driver)
Tyre King = +3% weight
Delfino = -2% weight
Racecar = +3% weight
ERacer = -5% weight
AveryGT = +2% weight
Earth = -1% weight

General Rules:
Standard OLR Rules apply
Try to keep 2 wheels on track at all times in the race (Rumble strips are classed as track)
No wall contact, no cheating, no hybrids etc, etc
AI contact is allowed, but NO penalties are allowed
Always stay within the 'spirit' of the rules

Track Specific Rules:
The tarmac areas outside of the lines / rumble-strips within both tunnels is considered OUT OF BOUNDS!

As in the last race (and throughout the series) an occasional off is to be expected in races of this length, and are not a reason for binning a race as long as you do not gain any time from them.

Duration:
numberoneaq1bvm2.gif

Starts: Friday 31st August. Ends: Sunday 9th September @ 23:59.999 GMT
Therefore you have 2 weekends to complete both qualifying and the race.
Please PM your qualifying / Race time & fastest lap-time for your chosen car to myself (Tyre King) before the deadline. (Format at bottom of page)

Final Words:
You are free, in-fact actively encouraged, to discuss split times but NOT lap times in qualifying, and you can discuss fastest lap times in the race, just not your final times.
You are also encouraged to give details on tyre-wear, handling, and anything else relating to the cars.

But above all, have fun.

Any problems, just PM either myself or Phil and we will sort it ASAP.

Let's have at it!

Well done to Racecar for the Fastest Quali lap and the fastest In-race lap. Congrats to Delfino for the race win, beating your's truly by 0.029 of a second.

Also well done to ERacer, for the switch to a car that works for him, namely the 787B Mazda.

Next race is gonna be a little different, it will not be a normal lap limited race.
It will be a traditional Le Mans style race with a time limit, and the winner will be the driver that completes the most laps in the allowed time. Ties for lap counts will be resolved by who finishes the extra lap after the time expires.

I.e.
Driver A does say 24 laps in the alloted time, and finishes the next lap in x'xx.xxx time.
Driver B also does 24 laps, but takes x'xx.xxx + .500's longer to finish the next lap.

Therefore Driver A wins!

Quali time submitted - Labor Day holiday made it possible to get a few good laps in at Mid-Field. Enjoyed the Sauber tremendously.

Question for all - how are you taking that first right turn?

I've tried a "V" approach, cutting into the right as much as possible and taking a straight line (more or less), then braking hard at the apex and turning sharply to follow a straight line out of the long curve (upside-down V actually). Also tried a simple inside the long curve line, but lost time.

Seems this first righty can make or break my lap time. How about you?

Also noticed the approach to the first tunnel is critical. Before the right turn, instead of cutting the corner to the inside right, I stay outside to the left and turn sharply which gives me more speed going into the tunnel and keeps the car away from the forbidden zones.

I tell you what guys......I'm really enjoying this combo!

Midfield has always been a favorite track, from way back when, it's got almost everything a racer could want. Long straight, highly technical sweepers, esses that test the nerve, off-camber corners, hairpins and lots of elevation change.

Add to that, the power of the cars, race tyres and AI that are easily passed.........Racer Heaven!

Now, as to the best line through the first couple of corners.
I take a line right down the line on the left of the track, BTTW till the under-pass, and brake hard AT the start of the shadow, stay straight till after the shadow and then start feeding in a little turn on the wheel. Back on the throttle for a curving line hitting the apex at the end of the rumble strip on the right then the end of the left one (turn one), and then a little lift-off before the right one again and then the end of the left one (turn two). Basically turning them into one long tightening corner, with a super-fast exit!

Turn three needs a little (and I mean a little) brake before the left rumble, just enough to allow the car to turn (there's also a little trick to getting the car to turn in better with a lift and a wiggle instead of the light brake. But I'll keep that one to myself! :sly: ), then foot down hard all the way through to the braking zone for the right into the first tunnel.

Et' Viola!
A sub 18 second T1!:)

And as to the tunnel turns, again turn them into one corner with your apex right in the middle of them, and you'll be amazed at the speed you will end up with!👍👍

Oh, and all this is on RM fronts and RH rears. And averaging sub 58.5 second laps on full fuel-load. Getting 56's with RS/RM's as the fual burns off!

Neil

Del approaches the first couple of right handers the same way ; the start of the shadow under the bridge is the breaking marker ... floating through to turn 3 at full throttle .
For turn three just like TK , sometimes i'll touch the brake but if the car is on the "perfect" line ; i'll just lift {been watching you TK at the track :)}

The left hander after the 1st tunnel is where Del believes he may gain some time {approach wide as possible ; braking very very late ; reducing the corner radius}

Favourite corner on the track is the tight left hander prior to the 3rd tunnel ... love floating this one ! {some cars do it much better than others} braking between the 2 apex corners going down the hill and hitting the throttle for a quick squirt before the L/Hander . {braking late here unsettles whatever car your driving .. too much}

Sub 18 sec T1 ! .. on RM/RH ! .. :crazy: {early in the race anyway}

Seems your 1st stint is on RM/RH TK .. i'll be using this combo mid race , though will try three different strategys before submitting times .

My strategies always involve using the hardest compounds at the beginning of the race. Why waste a soft compound with a full tank? The weight advantage of burning off the fuel is complimented by using softer compounds. The time you lose overall, is offset by the fastest laps you can do at the end of the race, plus at the start of the race, the first 2 laps are usually crap so they might as well be really pushy hard-compound laps as opposed to over-heating laps on soft compounds.

Anyway, that's my philosophy.

Excellent point Neil. I was debating that point earlier this evening: do I use softer tires in the begining when the car is heavier (loaded w/fuel) and therefore in need of more grip, or do I use softer tires at the end when the car is lighter (less fuel) and really max out my speed. Tough call to make.

:) Used to be my approach 100% of the time but when and if theres time .. i try both ; using the harder compounds later in the race occassionally gets surprising results .
Sometimes it's an advantage to use softer rubber early .. it helps to clear the field on the first lap .
So far ive tried 4 different strategies at Midfield and running the harder tyres on the 3rd stint gives the better result .

Well, I've adapted my strategy, and it has paid off!
Fr/Rear
RS/RM L1-7
RM/RM L8-15
RS/RM L16-22
RS/RM L23-29

managed to get the RM rears to last 7.5 laps with consistently sub 57.5 (most sub 57) laps for most of the race. Fastest lap was bottom quarter of 56's.

Doing Quali laps now!

EDIT
Done!
Quali splits T1: 16.707 T2: 34.004 T3: Sub 54.750

Wow!! Nice laps Neil!

Still getting used to the 787B (far better than my poor Jaguar)

This one's a 2-stoper, but managing only 58's consistently. I always try to keep 4 wheels on the track - don't like grass in my intake :)

RS/RS L1-8
RS/RS L9-16
RM/RM L17-29

Need to put in a lot more effort tomorrow.

Phil

EDIT:
Well, if anyone here could recommend a good, educational book (or web site) to me on how to race and how to find the correct line(s) I would be most appreciative.

I tried very hard to put together 29 fast, quality laps - enjoyed every one of them 👍 Times sent. Good luck all!!

Phil

As of this post, Its raining very hard here in texas so I may not be able to send times for a while should a power outage happen so please accept them when I do send them.

My God!

The great state of Texas, in the Western world's super-power, brought to a halt by some rain!:odd:

You should try living in the Lake District, England where I do........!

There's a reason why it's called the Lakes District, it rains all the bloody time, and we don't get power outages!

J/K!:D

Your times will be accepted, even if late. That is until I do the results, sometime in the afternoon GMT.

Thanks for understanding. At the time you posted, I had no power. I have sent my times now and hope they are good.

Yes, but while visiting Texas during a rain storm, it was former President Lyndon B. Johnson who commented to the press that "It's comin' down harder than a cow pissin' on a flat rock!" True quote.

Everything's a bit bigger in the great state of Texas :D
