I dont normally buy or even drive the standard cars I've won but I figured I'd give the Lancia a shot since the new version is so incredibly beautiful:

I have the rally version with around 270 horses and the stock one with 190. Both are just amazing. The handling is phenomenal on both of them. Every single turn you can easily perform flawless drifts. Not insane "drifting" drifts, but nice slides exiting a corner.

Any other great standard cars? Preferably an MR or FR car.

I couldn't agree with you more, very fun to drive, I have the Rally version lots of fun just wish it had a little more power so it could take on the big dogs.

I agree that it looks great, but in my (limited) driving experience I've always found it pretty uncontrollable. I'll still have to spend some more time with it before I pass final judgment, though.

It certainly takes some getting used to due to the very short wheel base.

I find the best way to drive it is by keeping a small amount of gas on whilst braking. This helps to stop it spinning if you're not completely straight under braking.

Once you're used to driving it like this, you can really hustle it through the bends.

Word. The new Stratos is awesome. The older ones are nice too, both rally and street.

I hope they can get the new one in as a premium in DLC or GT6. I am suprised the stratus's weren't premium, especially the rally version, being how iconic it is.

I love how they play with you in the corners. And the wedge shape is strangely attractice.

As far as the Stratos in GT5, no car in real life could drive like that. Crazy oversteer.

That's what made them such legendarily good rally cars. In an age where tire grip was questionable at best, a car that could turn quickly was desired.

And a car that can turn too quickly is a car that's very easy to spin. Many experienced racing drivers have lost control of the Stratos at 10/10ths... and not always in the dirt...

Personally I love the '04 Pontiac GTO as far as a fun standard car. I haven't found any car nearly as stable while sliding. It suffers from understeer if you don't set up for the corners right, but once you kick it sideways it slides like a dream. Plus it sounds pretty good too.

Oh, and it helps that I own an '05 version in real life :D

It's just because the default tune is for rallying purposes.
When on tarmac, you should lower the car a LOT and tune the suspension to get less (lift off) oversteer.

By the way, there are dozen of amazing standard cars, even pure stock.
My favourite underdog now is the Holden Monaro, and the old GT40 among the worst looking ported race cars. It's so ugly, but it's ok ok if you just drive it around and listen to its sound.

What you're doing is making sure the fronts lock up before the rears so the car will induce understeer rather than oversteer under braking. A much easier way to do this is to make you're front brakes stronger and/or rears weaker

I kind of like the nippyness of the GSX-R/4, it's like a low horsepower super car. And the Buick GNX has a special place in my heart, even if it takes some upgrading to be very competitive, but when it came out it was the fastest accelerating car in the world.

Also, the Stratos is one of the best cars ever made, and the new version looks just as amazing. A car with a short wheelbase is just amazing, too bad there are so few in GT5 that have enough power to make them as worthwhile.

tell that to the stig!

and yes... i do believe that it is an AMAZINGLY cool car.
i just wish someone had a tune for both the road and rally cars that a schmuck like me can use without having to drift and slide.

Well that certainly proves the point that it slides. Not so much about the great handling though. But it WAS in the rain.

Whatever I dont care. I have plenty of cars that handle amazing and dont slide through corners in the game. For a car that does slide, it sure handles indefinitely better than any other car that slides.

The other thing that made the Stratos so twitchy is the engine being mounted very high in the chassis, meaning when you lift off you get a much more severe shifting of weight off the rear axle. I think once you get used to that it's fine, though it's much easier to say that about GT5 than it is about real life... It's the same thing that makes the Murcielago quite twitchy when lifting, that's another car with a high mid engine, except that one has quite a lot more bulk!

I love the Stratos, though, there's nothing quite like it. My driving style is quite an oversteery one, so the Stratos and I get on well. That new one is amazing, too, I wonder how much it cost, given the car it's based on? Such a shame that Lancia have ended up making the cars they do...

If you watch the whole episode, you will see that the particular car they test for the lap is a kit-car, not a real Stratos. Evidently, the kit was very poorly put together as it fell apart repeatedly during the film. There is a far better, more complementary film about the Stratos made by Top Gear.

Also check out their similar film about the Delta Integrale Evo2, another amazing car from Lancia.

yea, shoulda shown the whole episode on the kit but just wanted to show the stig lose it.
it's a pretty funny episode (they all are)

Watch some classic Stratos videos.... It's got the rep for being one of the most sideways cars of all time - which is exactly why it's such a great machine for what it was designed for. I'm not going to try to defend the GT series as having every car spot-on, but they really do seem to do a good job most of the time. One thing that might be hampering your enjoyment is if you use a wildly incorrect tire for the car. I went through that with the Ford GT (street car) in GT4: I was convinced for ages that no car could possibly be that crazy. But in the end it was just my tire choice. The car handled fantastic as long as you stuck to RSH or harder tires. But there was some weird handling quirk, and because I was trying over and over to tune the car on RMs, I was never able to get it to handle properly. I don't know if that's the case here, but try the road version on SH or SM tires and the Rally version on dirt or snow, and on SS tires for tarmac. I do this and as far as I can tell these cars handle very appropriately. Another issue might be the whole offline/online physics thing; where certain cars and certain tracks (Trial Mountain is the worst) just go absolutely nuts when combined. So if you are trying them online, try some more tracks and see how things work out for you then. Once you learn to drive these things (and avoid the bad tracks online), you'll come to admire the car as much as many of us do.

Probably the ugliest looking car I've seen for a modern looking sports car

Can't wait to give it a spin though if it's as fun as you all say 👍
