Okay, this all stemmed from an argument with my mum when she found out I always leave my TV and Hi-Fi on standby.

Basically she's been watching this stupid program on TV pesented by a women who supposedly cycles everywhere, and is still obese, and is obsessed with being s picky as possible with energy consumption.

So, I did some research and found out that indeed, shock horror, my electrical items do consume power when on standby. But it's minute. But then she does it, the unthinkable, she pulls the 'well if everybody did the little things right we'd live in a better world.'

So now I must for the rest of my 'home' days get out of bed to turn the TV on before crawling back into it. Damn her.

So what are you habits regarding this?

The only way your appliances won't draw power is if you unplug them. The memory requires a constant power supply in order to keep your settings (such as the clock). Most appliances (TV, for example) consume less than 1 watt in standy mode ...

365*24*1 = 8760 Wh or 8.76 kWh ... I don't know how much it costs where you live, but that's all of 54 cents per year per appliance here ... Whoopty-****ing-do ... 54 cents per year is well worth the price to not have to reset the settings every day, IMO ... And I'm very doubtful the average home has 60+ electrical appliances ...

BTW, I'm guessing you meant "turn your TV OFF and crawl back into bed."

Ahh yes, i think my mum was watching too. According to that woman on tv, in standby mode, appliances use 80% of their normal power consumption. Yeah right ...

We leave everything in standby mode. My hifi is, my monitor is (it doesn't have a manual off button without crawling under the desk and unplugging it), our tv in the dining room is on standby, 28inch tv in lounge is on standby. My ps2 is on standby too ;) Everything possible, basically.

Nope. I have a habit of waking up and turning on the TV while I lie in bed and wake up properly. I watch abit of news and usually sport from the day before aswell.

All so much easier using the remote.

We leave everything on standby.

The "standby" power consumption of a device as a percentage of its "on" varies according to the device. But for things like large televisions, it's pure idiocy to say that the thing consumes 80% of its "on" power when it's in "standby". With my TV (a 32" WEGA CRT), I can hear an industrial-sized relay clicking when I switch it on that I know is firing up the electron gun and the magnets. Same with my Surround amp. When they're in standby, they're pretty much just running the circuits that detect the wake signal from the remote.

Don't worry about it. Sure, yeah, if you switched it off, you would use less power, but not by enough to make any real difference to the planet. Plus, you'd wear out the switch and would have to bin the device, which is somewhat wasteful.

My hi-fi amplifier never gets put in standby or switched off. It's been off three times in two years, once when it was moved from one room to another, and twice during unscheduled electrical outages. It is consuming power, and it is wasteful, but it sounds so much better when it's properly warm that I don't care!!

I'd tell her to put down the fork. Face.

I too leave most things in standby, it just makes sense and for the small price you pay it makes life a hell of a lot easier. We had a tv last year that hummed when in standby which prompted us to push the button every now and then as it was a little disconcerting, but aside from that we're standby friendly.
