Race Report is in post #5

This thread is about my attempt to do an endurance race on a custom course in arcade mode. It also provides information about do-it-yourself endurance races in arcade mode in general.

My plan is to run a 200 mile endurance race in arcade mode on my custom track Long Pine Raceway. The track is 6.17 miles with 55 turns (probably 30 "real" turns). You can see a video of the track below.

My car will be a stock-tune GT300 car, downgraded to Sport Soft tires.

Since the AI is lacking in driving skill I need them to be in faster cars, an preferably with better tires, to make the race a challenge.

Unfortunately… We can’t choose the cars the AI use, or the tires. At least not directly.

But we can “help” GT5 choose better cars for the AI by how we enter the race. Below are some examples.

I have the AI car strength set to 10 for all these experiments.

First I entered a race with the RE Amemiya AsparDrink RX7 ’06, 532PP. Here is the AI grid:

155 2.5 V6 TI ‘93
High End Performance G37
CUSCO Impreza ‘03
190 E Evo II TC
Trans Cammer
RSC Rally Raid
205 Turbo 16 Evo 2 Rally car
HPA Stage II R32
ARTA Garaiya ‘08
Opel Calibra TC
Lancia Delta S4 Rally car
CUSCO Impreza ‘08
Wedssport Celica
ARTA Garaiya ‘03
Wedssport IS350

Then I stuck on the Stage 3 turbo and re-entered the race at 566PP. Here is the AI grid:

ABT Audi TT-R TC
Calsonic Skyline ‘93
Loctite Mugen NSX ‘01
NSX-R Prototype LM
FTO Super TC
GT40 Race Car
BNR34 Skyline N1 ‘06
Mobil 1 NSX ‘01
A4 TC ‘04
Castrol Mugen NSX ‘00
Falken GT-R Race Car
Takata Dome NSX ‘03
Arta NSX ‘00
IS F Racing Concept
Raybrig NSX ‘00

As you can see, the second grid is much stronger based on the increase in PP of my car.

But look what I got when I entered the race with a GT-R tuned to 566 (same PP as above):

Cerbera Speed 12
W12 Nardo
SLR McLaren
Cien Concept
Enzo
ZZII
McLaren F1
Cerbera Speed 12
W12 Nardo
Viper ACR
Ford GT
Corvette ZR1 ‘09
Cien Concept
ZZII
McLaren F1

So if you enter with a race car, you get race cars for the AI, if a street car you get street cars for the AI.

The idea is to tune up a car, enter the race, and once the AI grid is set, de-tune it as much as desired to make the race challenging.

So... Armed with this information I start a test run. I select 20 laps, turn on tire wear, and crank my PP up to 566. I get an AI grid almost identical to the second one above with several NSX Super GT cars. I tune my car down to 525PP and put on Sport Soft tires.

At the start the AI cars pull away from me as expected given their 50PP advantage, but at the first turn I pass 2 cars. Turn after turn I overtake 1 or 2 cars. The AI are braking so early and going so slow through the corners it's like they've got comfort tires.

By the time I reach the back stretch I am on the back bumper of the lead car (Takata Dome NSX). He pulls away easily on the straight but I am back to his bumper entering the turn combination at the end of the straight.

Through the right-left combination I take the lead.

For the next 4 laps I increase my lead to 20 seconds. I decided to abort the test.

To say the least this is very disappointing. I have harder tires and 50 less PP and I'm still lapping 6 seconds a lap faster. I must somehow get the AI in faster cars or handicap myself with even harder tires or added weight.

To be continued...

EDIT: TEST 2

This time I entered with a 623PP Super GT NSX and here is the AI grid:

GT LM Spec II
GT LM Test Car
XJ220 Race Car
GTS-R Team Oreca
Camaro LM
2D
GT by Citroen Race Car
C5-R
330 P4
GTS-R Ream Oreca
GT LM Race Car
Nomad Diablo
Falcon XR8
Storm V12
Xanavi Nismo Z

I detuned to 670PP and switched to SS tires and hit go.

I easily picked off most of the AI cars but the 2 GT LM cars proved more of a challenge. They are fast in a straight line and take the corners a little better than the other AI. My car is very loose on the SS tires with stock suspension settings.

But still I overtake them near the end of lap 1. I make no effort to block them on the front straight so they both smoke by me. But I get both back in the S's and continue to hold the lead from this point on, stretching it to 6 seconds by the end of lap 3.

That's enough for this test.

Next test: LM car.

R10 TDI tuned to 693PP

AI field:

R92CP
908
XJR-9
905
908
Judd GV5
Speed 8
C60 '05
V12 LMR
R8 Race Car
878B
R89C
C60 '03
GT-ONE
R8 Race Car

This is clearly the strongest AI field possible without going open-wheel.

I tune down to 650PP and hit go.

Made it to the lead again on lap 1. Spun coming on to the front straight and dropped to 4th. Then 7th as 3 more blow by me as I'm coming back to speed.

Back to challenge for the lead and spun again. I'm seeing a trand here. An LM car with minimum downforce is really a challenge on this track.

I struggle for another 2 laps, gaining positions then spinning again. My rear tires are half gone at the end of lap 2.

Test done. I won't be using an LM car for my enduro.

OK, bit of a eureka moment here.

The AI grid is set by your PP and your TIRES. I tried the same setup as before with the Amemiya RX7 at 566PP but this time I entered with Race Soft tires. Here is the AI grid I got:

GT LM Race Car
Z06 C2 Race Car
XJ220 LM
Falcon XR8
YellowHat GT-R '08
GT by Citroen RC
Nomad Diablo
Xanavi Nismo GT-R '03
Xanavi Nismo Z '06
Storm V12
350Z Concept LM
330 P4
2D
Amuse GT1 Turbo
Mark IV RC

This is a very strong grid to go against a GT300 car, but I already know I will have to downgrade power and tires. Especially since I know that the AI will run their tires completely to 0 before pitting, resulting in hideously slow laps.

But just maybe this will work out.

Test to follow.

Great idea. Somehow the track reminds me of Autopolis. Well, the general layout at least.

I did some mocking about in Arcade mode too, but have to say that on customs tracks the AI is hopeless, sadly. Seems they go into "default corner mode" every time the approach a bend.

By any chance, do you share this track online?

Yes I agree the AI are hopeless on custom tracks. But I'm determined to get a close finish somehow.

Yes Long Pine Raceway is shared.

OK here is what I came up with.

I max tuned the Amemiya RX7, including race soft tires, and created a race.

The AI grid was:

GT LM Race Car
Z06 C2 Race Car
GT by Citroen RC
350Z Concept LM
Xanavi Nismo GT-R '03
Xanavi Nismo Z '06
Mark IV RC
330 P4
XJ220 LM
2D
Nomad Diablo
Falcon XR8
Amuse GT-1 Turbo
Tomica GT-R '08
Storm V12
Amemiya AsparaDrink RX7 '06 (500PP with sport soft tires)

I switched to sport soft tires and tuned my car down to 500PP by taking off the turbo, setting downforce to minimum, and adding 200kg ballast. I also had to limit power to 99% to get to an even 500PP.

My plan is to run 11 lap stints and cut the race in thirds. I don't think the tires could do more than that anyway.

It was just going to be a test run but I am 11 laps (45 minutes) in and making my first pit stop. I will make a full report when I'm done but right now I'll just say it's been the most fun 45 minutes I've had in arcade mode. I have been running between 1st and 3rd the whole race, swapping positions at least once per lap, usually 3 or 4 times a lap. At first it was me and the GT LM duking it out, trading 1st 20 times or more.

Then the Citroen spaceship joined the fight, making it a tight 3-way battle. I was never more than 2 seconds apart from my closest rival.

My car is a little tight with the front downforce set to minimum and my front tires are wearing about 25% faster than the rears. I set the brake bias to the rear and try to stay off the gas while turning as much as possible. It helps a little but I'll just have to deal with it.

When I came into the pits I was leading by a few car lengths over the Citroen but dropped to 4th before I got to my stall.

It remains to be seen what will happen for the next 22 laps but so far it's everything I could have hoped for.

Continued:

I came out of the pits in 14th place. Obviously I'm the only one pitting this lap. The GT LM pits the next lap but I didn't see when the Citroen pitted. I didn't see him again actually.

Over the next few laps I pass several cars and everybody pits except the 2D so I'm in the lead, 12 seconds up on the 2D.

The GT LM is charging hard with fresh tires and by lap 16 he's in 3rd, a few seconds behind the 2D. On lap 17 he's caught the 2D and passes him on the front straight beginning lap 18.

By going back to the replay I find the 2D didn't pit until lap 19!!!

That puts the GT LM less than a straight behind me and with his fresher tires he's on me by lap 20.

We play tag for 2 laps until I pit on lap 22. I come out in 4th but I'm 35 seconds behind the GT LM. I know he's going to pit on lap 24 so I make the most out of my new tires to close the gap and pass him just before he pits.

He comes out in 8th place 40 seconds behind me, but with 2 laps fresher tires he's closing at an alarming rate. The race has 8 laps to go and he's chopping 6 seconds a lap off my lead. The math doesn't look good. I've been driving like a gentleman up till now but I'm not simply going to move over when he catches me this time.

He catches me at the end of the front straight beginning lap 32. It's no problem for me to gain a bit of cushion in the S's but whenever the road straightens out he's rocket propelled. So we play accordion through lap 32 and I come onto the front straight with a gap of 2 seconds. He makes short work of the gap and I have to block him just past the start line.

This is where it got REALLY hairy because he didn't want to be blocked and hit me in the left quarter sending me 20 degrees out of shape. Fortunately he hit his brakes and I was able to straighten it up in time to late brake for turn 1, almost going into the grass, but holding the lead.

We play accordion again through lap 33. I am completely out of tires so I can't gain much on him in the turns so he's not far behind me coming onto the back straight. A couple of weaves keeps him behind and he makes a small slip in turn 24 so I have a 2 second gap. I manage to hold that until we come onto the front straight again.

He's on afterburner closing it down but too little too late. I finish 0.577 seconds ahead, with the 2D coming 3 seconds behind to complete the podium after only pitting 1 time while all other cars pitted twice.

My best lap was 3:58.98 and the GT LM had a best of 3:49.85. On open track with fresh tires he's a monster. Thankfully he ran his tires to 0 before pitting so his average lap time was close to mine.

I ended the race with 493PP, demonstrated by a slight darkening of the oil.
